Thomas H. "Mike" Friel, 84, of Whitehall, passed away peacefully on Monday evening, Nov. 12, surrounded by his loving and devoted family. He was the husband of Rosemary J. (Amici) Friel for 35 years.
He worked in the clerical department of Mack Truck until retiring, and, earlier in life, was employed by the former Central Railroad of New Jersey.
Born in East Mauch Chunk, he was a son of the late Hugh E. and Bertha M. (Albeck) Friel.
He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Allentown,
and the Knights of Columbus.
He was a 1947 graduate and outstanding athlete of the former Mauch Chunk Catholic High School, where he was an outstanding athlete. He was the captain of the basketball team that made it to the state finals; was a talented baseball player; and excelled in all sports.
Friel was inducted into the Jim Thorpe Sports Hall of Fame.
He was an avid bowler.
He was a wonderful husband, loving brother, very special uncle to a host of nieces and nephews and their families, and a dedicated friend.
Surviving in addition to his widow are three sisters, Lorraine Boyle of Whitehall, Patricia, wife of Al Heaney of Jim Thorpe, and Rosemarie, wife of Joseph Svetik of Chalfont; a brother, James J., and his wife, Susan (Karroll), of Whitehall; and nieces and nephews and their families;
Service: Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 am Friday, Nov. 16, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Allentown, with Rev. Msgr. Victor F. Finelli officiating. Interment, Resurrection Cemetery, Upper Macungie Twp. Call 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday in the foyer of the church. Contributions in his name may be made to the church, 1046 W.
