Rev. Vernon F. Searfoss
The Rev. Vernon Francis Searfoss, 81, of Clarks Summit, passed away Sunday morning, May 5. He was the husband of Dorothy Pondish. They were married on June 7, 1958.
Born in East Mauch Chunk, he was a son of the late George Searfoss and Nora Bryfogle.
He graduated with a BA from Lehigh University in 1955, went on to receive his Master of Divinity degree from the General Theological Seminary in New York City in 1958, and took continuing education courses at Johns Hopkins University, specializing in the Ministry of Death and Dying.Rev. Searfoss served as rector of several parishes in the Lehigh Valley before becoming rector of The Church of the Good Shepherd, Scranton, in 1969, where he served until his retirement in 1996. He was a supply priest at St. James Church, Dundaff.
He was very active in the deaf community, serving in the Diocesan Ministry to the Deaf for 17 years, and as vicar of St. Paul Church for the Deaf in Scranton.
The deceased served on several Diocesan Councils and was Deputy to the General Convention from 1973-76. He was a founder and president of Episcopal House, Allentown
He was a member of the Scranton School Board for eight years, serving as chairman of both the finance and transportation committees. He ran for Mayor of Scranton in 1978.
He was the recipient of several awards, including Outstanding Citizenship Recognition and Outstanding Contribution to Education from the Pa. Senate, as well as a commendation from Vice President Hubert Humphrey for completion of Episcopal House.
Surviving in addition to his widow are three children, Jonathan Searfoss, and his wife, Denise, of Lake Ariel, Karen, wife of Tracy Ingram of Great Falls, Va., and Laura, wife of Frank Angelo of Sugar Land, Tex.; four grandchildren, Kadiera Searfoss Ingram, David Nicholas Angelo, Jonathan George Searfoss and Sarah Elizabeth Angelo; and three siblings, Thomas Bryfogle, Donald Searfoss and Gloria Sebelin.
He was also predeceased by four siblings, George, Rueben, John and Kenneth.
Service: Funeral service 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 10, St. Mark/St. John Episcopal Church, 21 Race St., Jim Thorpe, with the Rt. Rev. Paul V. Marshall officiating. Interment, Sky-View Cemetery, Tamaqua. Arrangements by Edward F. Melber Funeral Home, 524 Center St., Jim Thorpe.
