Dr. Fred Tiley
Dr. Fred Tiley, 78, passed away on Feb. 20 in Salem, OR, where he had resided since 1970.
He was born and raised in Lansford and participated in football, track and basketball for LHS.
He graduated from Deerfield Academy in MA, followed by his undergraduate studies at Princeton, where he captained the freshman football team and then the varsity team in his senior year.
He was invited to try out for the Baltimore Colts, but he chose to pursue his education. He went to Columbia Medical School and then to the University of Rochester for his general surgery residency.
An Air Force veteran, he served two years as a general surgeon at Chanute Air Force Base, IL, where he attained the rank of Captain.
After his discharge, he completed his orthopaedic residency at Yale, New Haven hospital and a fellowship at Neuffield Orthopaedics in Oxford, England.
Dr. Tiley is survived by his daughter, Salli Stephens-Tiley, and two sons, Fritz Stephens-Tiley and Casey Tiley, as well as two grandsons in Oregon. He is also survived by his sister, Dana Tiley Cleary in FL., as well as her three sons and her seven grandchildren
His mother, Virginia (Bachman) Tiley was deceased at 86 in 2005 and his father William Tiley at 102 in 2013.
A private family remembrance will be held in Oregon.
