Gretel Ann Malkin
Gretel Ann Malkin, 74, of 18 W. White Street, Summit Hill, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, at the home of her sister and brother-in- law, Dr Louis and Maxine Vermillion.
She was the daughter of the late Thelma Derby and Thomas J. Malkin.
She was a 1957 graduate of Summit Hill High School and a 1961 graduate of Penn State University.
She was a Home Economics teacher in Greencastle Antrim School District, New Castle, Lawrence County, for 32 years.
In 1988 she received the Outstanding Teacher Award from the South-Central PA Council for School Improvement in recognition of teaching excellence and innovative curriculum development practices. She was known to go above and beyond in her career when helping her students.
In 1997 she returned to her hometown and became active in community affairs including the Summit Hill Historical Society, of which she was a charter member.
Gretel could often be found working at the organization's museum and volunteered for many events.
She was a life long member of the Hope of Christ Presbyterian Church where she served as lector and deacon and a member of the Presbyterian Woman's Group.
Gretel was an accomplished seamstress and quilter and enjoyed sharing her skills teaching and helping others. Gretel was a kind and generous woman who was known affectionately by many as "Aunt Gretel".
Besides her sister and brother in law, she is survived by two nephews Dr. Richard Vermillion, and his wife Dr. Jennifer, and their sons Ethan and Maxwell, and Thomas Vermillion, and his wife Alesha, and their children Abigail, Natalie, and Brody, all of Summit Hill; and niece Allison Vermillion Long, and her husband Allan, and their son Leland, of Fairbanks, AK.; and her godson Brian Schuyler, Laguna Niguel, CA.
Service: Memorial service on Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, at noon in Hope of Christ Presbyterian Church, Market & White streets, Summit Hill, with Rev. Barbara Lucia officiating. Calling hours are on Monday from 10 a.m. to noon at the church. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
