Harold R. Wertman, 87, of Walnutport, formerly of Slatedale, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, in his home. He was the husband of Alberta Dolly (Eck) Wertman. They celebrated 60 years of marriage in December. |
Born Feb. 22, 1926, in Slatedale, he was a son of the late Victor and Carrie (Rex) Wertman.
Harold graduated from the former Slatington High School.
He was a Navy veteran during World War II, serving in the Panama Canal region.
He was employed by the former Bethlehem Steel Corp. in the combustion department for 35 years until retiring.
He also received a diploma from the former Western Pennsylvania Horological Institute, where he was a certified chronograph technician. For 50 years he serviced clocks and watches and was a highly skilled wood craftsman for 22 years.
Harold was a longtime member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Slatedale, where he served on council for four years.
He held life memberships with the Diamond Fire Company, Walnutport and Citizens Fire Company No. 1, Slatedale, and was a member of Allen O. Delke American Legion Post 16, Slatington.
Survivors: wife; daughter, Carol Polkowski of Slatington; son, Jeffrey and his fiancee, Kim Gasper and her daughter, Kristin Morgan, of Walnutport; grandsons, Sean Polkowski and Tyler Wertman; sister, Marie Nikisher of Danielsville; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by six brothers and a sister.
Services: Memorial, 11 a.m., Saturday, March 9, 2013, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 4118 Main St., Slatedale. Call 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, in the church. The Rev. David L. Hess will officiate. Interment will be in Slatedale Cemetery with military honors.
