Jean M. Derr, 88, of Mahanoy Street, Tamaqua, died Friday, July 4, in Coaldale. She was the widow of Paul E. "Rufie" Derr, who died in 1980.
She began her working career at the J.E. Morgan Knitting Mills, Tamaqua, then moved to the former Woolworth's in Tamaqua, where she worked as a floor lady. She was then employed as a legal secretary for Atty. Sparks Reese, which later became the Reese, DeSantis and Stine Law Firm.
Born in Tamaqua, she was a daughter of the late William and Helen (Ball) Taylor.
She was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tamaqua, where she sang in the various choirs for 81 years and was a member of the blanket ministry.
A 1943 graduate of Tamaqua High School, she attended the 70th anniversary reunion. She was an avid participant of St. Luke's Pulmonary Rehab for 19 years.
Surviving are two daughters, Loretta, wife of Robert Gilfert of West Penn Township, and Arlene Derr in Hazle Village; a son, Paul K. "Gus" Derr and his wife, Kimberly, of Millville; eight grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Esther Major; and a brother, William Taylor.
Service: 11 a.m., Wednesday, Zizelmann-Roche Funeral Home, 500 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, with the Rev. Virginia Goodwin officiating. Call 9-11 a.m. Wednesday.
