John C. Harkins Jr., 77, of Second Street, Coaldale, formerly of Lansford, entered into eternal rest on Friday, Oct. 19, in the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. He was the husband of Rose (Yaroma) Harkins. They celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary in July.
Born in Hazelton, he was a son of the late John C. Sr. and Marion (Bonner) Harkins.
He was a member of St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, Lansford, where he was a Eucharistic Minister and lector until he became ill.
A 1953 graduate of the former St. Ann High School, Lansford, he earned a bachelor of education degree in 1957 from the East Stroudsburg State Teachers College and a master's degree in English from Penn State University in 1971.
He began his teaching career at the former Lansford High School and then became part of Panther Valley's teaching staff. He also taught at Lehigh-Carbon Community College.
Harkins was the head football, basketball and track coach at Lansford High. While at Panther Valley, he was head basketball coach for six years, durng which time his teams compiled a record of 110-37. In addition, he was a PIAA football official for 20 years.
The deceased was an Army veteran, having served 1957-59.
He received the Panther Valley Irish American Association's Shamrock Award in 1992 and was inducted into the Carbon County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.
Harkins was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.
Surviving in addition to his widow are a son Timothy of Hazle Township; a daughter Karen of Coaldale; two grandchildren, Seth and Dylan; and two nieces.
Service: Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, Lansford, with the Rev. K.A. Medve officiating. Military graveside service, Sky-View Memorial Park, Hometown, under direction of Panther Valley High School JROTC. Call 6-8 o'clock tonight and 9:30-11 a.m. Tuesday in the church. Arrangements by Sverchek-Blazosky Funeral Home, Lansford.
