John F. Gurka, 90, of Lansford, passed away on Friday, March 29, in the Weatherwood Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center, Weatherly. He was the husband of Wilma (Adams) Gurka. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on March 15.

He first worked for the L.C. & N. Mines and had retired from PennDOT as a blacksmith.
Born in Summit Hill, he was a son of the late Joseph and Mary (Tucker) Gurka.
A graduate of the former Summit Hill High School, he was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in Burma.
Gurka was a member of St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, Lansford, and a previous active member of the former SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Lansford.
He was a life member of the Lansford American Legion Post.
Surviving are a son Richard, and his wife, Linda, of Mechanicsburg; a daughter Sandra, wife of John Kane of Nesquehoning; seven grandchildren, John Kane of Palmerton, Lisa Whitsel of Coaldale, Brian Kane of Nesquehoning, Christy Keeley and Lauren Turby, both of Dillsburg, Pa., Jamie Reeder of Sterling, Va., and Austin Turby of Carlisle; a great-grandchild, Rylee Reeder; and a brother, Edward "Buzzy" of Lansford.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Melanie Turby; a brother Joseph; and a sister Pauline.
