Lawrence Dunkelberger Obituary

Lawrence A. Dunkelberger, 87, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011.
Born in Lansford, he was the son of the late Carl and Margurite Dunkelberger. Larry grew up in both Reading and Lansford, and graduated from Lansford High School in 1943. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, enlisting in early 1943 and attending training and gunnery school, before being assigned to the Navy Amphibious Forces. He participated in the 'D Day' landings on Omaha Beach, Normandy, on June 6, 1944, and later completed 44 English Channel crossings with his fleet.
After the service, Larry began his career with the Anthracite Gas Company in Lansford, before relocating to Wilmington, with his family in 1953, to work for the Atlas Powder Company, later known as ICI. He worked there for 33 years and retired in 1986.
Larry was a Life Member of the Elks Lodge in Tamaqua, and also a member of the Lansford AmVets and the Lehighton American Legion.
Larry is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Emma Dorothy (Davidson) Dunkelberger, as well as his son, Lawrence G. and six grandchildren, Shelley, Anne and Jeb Dunkelberger, Lauren Arrington, Robyn Arrington and Lynn Arrington Zunino and husband Edward; and two great grandchildren, Wyatt Shelley and Noah Zunino.
Additional survivors include his sister Rosemary Balliett, sister and brother-in-laws Marion Dunkelberger, Catherine and Charles Moscoe, Bertha Jane Kocher, William and Margaret Mary Davidson, and cousin Edward Herron and wife Shirley; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his younger brother, Donald, daughter-in-law Ann Hartman Dunkelberger, sister-in-law Dorothy Mae Davidson and brother-in-law John Kocher.
Services: will be private, with interment at Sky-View Memorial Park, Hometown, Tamaqua. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the charity, Children & Families First, 2005 Baynard Blvd., Wilmington, DE 19802.
