Mary Alice Lynch, 86, formerly of Tamaqua, died Saturday in St. Luke's Memorial Miner's Hospital, Coaldale, where she had been a resident since September 2012.
Prior to retiring in 1990, she had been employed as Nurse Director of the Department of Disease Control at the former Coaldale General Hospital. Previously, she had been employed as a nurse assistant, for over 40 years, in the Tamaqua office of Dr. Richard Miller.
Born Jan. 18, 1928, in Tamaqua, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Mary (Purcell) Lynch.
She lived most of her life in the family home on Center Street in Tamaqua, then moved to the Tamaqua ABC High Rise prior to moving to Coaldale.
A lifelong member of St. Jerome's Catholic Church, Tamaqua, she was an organist for more than 50 years.
She graduated as valedictorian of her class from both the former St. Jerome's High School and the Sacred Heart School of Nursing in Allentown.
Surviving are a brother-in-law, Raymond "Reds" Bonner of Tamaqua; two nieces, Kathy Bonner, wife of Michael Reimert, of Macungie, and Pat, wife of Joel Terefenko, of Quakertown; two great nieces, Christy, wife of Russell Davies, of Telford, and Kelly Terefenko of Philadelphia; and several cousins.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Kathleen Bonner.
Service: Mass of Christian Burial, 11 a.m. Wednesday, St. Jerome Catholic Church, Tamaqua. Interment, private. Call 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, at the church.
