Stephen Milkowich, 92, formerly of Edgemont Avenue, Palmerton, died peacefully Tuesday evening, February 19, 2013, at Weatherwood Nursing and Rehab Center, Weatherly. He was the husband of the late Helen (Tirpak) Milkowich, who passed in 1985. |
Stephen was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, participating in the European Theatre. He was a member of the American Legion, Palmerton Post, for over 67 years.
- Born in Palmerton, he was a son of the late Metro and Fannie (Petiak) Milkowich.
A graduate of the Palmerton High School, he worked as a blacksmith for the former N.J. Zinc Co, for 42 years, retiring in 1983.
Steve was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Palmerton, and a former member of their St. Vincent dePaul Society, and served on the festival committee.
An avid golfer, he was a member of the Blue Ridge Country Club, Palmerton, where he caddied as a youth. Steve had the distinction of making a hole-in-one on two occasions.
Steve enjoyed working with wood and created many one of a kind pieces still being enjoyed by his family and friends. He also enjoyed fishing and coin collecting. He played the guitar, organ, and was very accomplished on the harmonica.
Surviving are daughters, Carol A., wife of Duane Costenbader, Susan J., wife of Philip Steigerwalt, all of Palmerton; five grandchildren, Stephen, Lori, Amanda, Jason, and Sarah; 10 great grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Anna Zelinsky of Lehighton.
He was predeceased by sisters, Kathryn Weslosky, Mary Frank; and brothers, Charles, Michael, John, and Nicholas.
Services: Memorial Mass, 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 25, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 243 Lafayette Avenue, Palmerton. Call, 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday in church.
