Walter H. "Sonny" Kern of Emerald died Wednesday, Jan. 23, in the Good Shepherd Specialty Hospital, Bethlehem. He was the husband of Shirley L. (Frederick) Kern.

He worked in the changeover department at Mack Trucks, Allentown, retiring in 1996. Prior to that, he worked for the former Keystone Lamp Factory, Slatington, and the former Bethlehem Steel Corporation.
Born in Walnutport, he was a son of the late Harvey and Katie (Marsh) Kern.
He was a life member of the Emerald Fire Co. and a member of the Slatington Skeet Club, the Diamond Fire Co., Walnutport, and Grundsau Lodsch Nummer 18.
Surviving in addition to his widow are a son Bryon, and his wife, Suzanne, and a daughter Bridget, both of Emerald; three sisters, Jeanette Krause, Arvilla Peters and Delphine Hoch; four grandchildren, Scott, Ryan and Jared Kern and Katie Otero; and seven great-grandchildren, Samantha, Aaron, Arariel, Leyla, Zoey, Porter and Wyatt Kern.
He was also preceded in death by a son Bradley; and a sister, Nadine Gerhardt.
