William H. Kresge
William H. "Bud" Kresge, 96, of Brodheadsville, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2014 in the home of his son, Tom, surrounded by his loving family.
He was the husband of the late Margaret (Weitknecht) "Sparky" Kresge, who passed away in 2007.
Born in Brodheadsville, he was a son of the late Eugene and Hannah (Christman) Kresge.
Bud was a licensed funeral director for 67 years.
He graduated from Chestnuthill High School in 1937 and then from Eckels Mortuary School in Philadelphia in 1939.
He became a licensed funeral director in 1941. Bud worked for his father, Eugene, in the funeral home business started by his grandfather, William A. Kresge, in 1880.
He worked for his father for a year until he was drafted into the United States Army. He served in the Army in the European Theater during World War II.
Upon his return from the service, he worked for his father until taking over the business in 1948 upon his father's death.
He owned and operated the William H. Kresge Funeral Home from 1948 until his son, Tom, bought the business in 1984.
He continued to work at the funeral home until giving up his license in 2008.
He was a member of the Eastern Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association, the Pa. Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association.
Bud, the so called '"Mayor of Brodheadsville", was extremely community minded and belonged to a multitude of organizations.
He was the last surviving charter member and past president of the Western Pocono Lions Club. In 1992 he was named the Lion of the Year and in 1995 he was the club's Citizen of the Year. In 1997, he received the club's highest honor when he was named a Melvin Jones Fellow.
Bud was also a member of the Barger Lodge 325 Free and Accepted Masons in Bartonsville.
He was a member of the Grundsow Lodge Sexa and also a director for over 30 years.
He served on the Board of Directors of the Monroe County Department of Public Assistance for nine years and on the Board of Directors of Buena Vista Cemetery for over 50 years. He was the current president of the Cemetery Board.
He was one of the founders of the Little League in the West End.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert for over 50 years and a member of the VFW.
Bud was also a member of the West End Fire Co. and the West End Ambulance Association.
He was a member of Zion United Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville and a former council member.
He is survived by two sons, William E. Kresge and his wife, Gale of Brodheadsville and Thomas J. Kresge and his wife, Laura of Saylorsburg; two grandchildren, Sarah Anne Adams and her husband, Dan of Gilbert and Thomas C. Kresge and his fiance,' Ana of Brodheadsville; and a great granddaughter, Adelee Hannah Adams. He was preceded in death by a sister, Anne Shafer-Andraschko.
Services: Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 17 from the Kresge Funeral Home, 1763 Route 209 Brodheadsville, with the Rev. Ann Melot officiating. Bud will be buried next to his beloved wife "Sparky" in Buena Vista Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. until time of service on Friday.
