James F. Derby
James Forrest Derby, 85, of 9 W. Holland St., Summit Hill, passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2014. He was the husband of the late Frances (Kopack) Derby, who passed away in 2005.
James worked for Ametek as a supervisor for 25 years and also was a bus driver for the Panther Valley School District for 30 years.
Born in Summit Hill, he was a son of the late William B. and Sarah (Dankel) Derby.
He was a graduate of the former Summit Hill High School.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a corporal in the 76th Army Band, having served in France and Germany.
He was a member of the former St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Summit Hill.
He was very active in the Masonic Lodge having been a member of the Rajah Shrine Legion of Honor, Sgt. of the color guard, a past president of the Schuylkill Shrine Club and Rajah Shrine Club, a member of the Freemasons of Carbon County Lodge 0242, a member of the Scottish Rite of Allentown, a member of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, and a member of the Hillbilly Clan.
James was a past president, engineer, and life member of the Diligence Fire Co. of Summit Hill, a 4 County Fireman's Association life member, and a member of the Summit Hill American Legion Post.
Surviving are two daughters, Rev. Debbie Derby of Mount Penn, Reading, and Anna Marie Derby, with whom he resided; a sister, Lois Whildin of Allentown; his beloved Boston terrier, Katie; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Claude Derby.
Services: Memorial service is on Thursday, March, 6, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the Thomas J. Parambo Funeral Home, 54 W. Fell St., Summit Hill, with the Rev. Debbie Derby officiating. Military interment will follow at G.A.R. Cemetery, Summit Hill. Calling hours are Thursday from 10-11 a.m.
