Charles D. Silliman
Charles D. Silliman, 84, of Hahn's Dairy Road, Palmerton, Lower Towamensing Township, died Saturday evening, July 5, in his home. He was the husband of Florence E. (Eckhart) Silliman since June 24, 1961.
He was a clerk in the paint department of Shea's Hardware, Palmerton, and previously was a clerk and bookkeeper for the former New Jersey Zinc Company and the former Costenbader's Hardware, both of Palmerton.
Born in Lower Towamensing Township, he was a son of the late Samuel Abraham Sr. and Lizzie J. (Kuntzman) Silliman.
He was a life member of Salem United Methodist Church, Aquashicola, where he was a former superintendent and teacher of the Sunday school and a longtime choir member.
Silliman was a graduate of the former Aquashicola High School and a 1947 graduate of the Palmerton High School.
He was a member of the Aquashicola Volunteer Fire Department and a member and former master of the Little Gap Grange, both of Lower Towamensing Township.
The deceased was the food pantry coordinator for the C.A.C.P.A.C., Palmerton, a board member of the Shepherd House, and a volunteer driver for the elderly.
Silliman received the Shepherd House Volunteer Award, the 2005 Community Hero Award from the Mauch Chunk Trust Company and the 2007 Volunteer Award from the Palmerton Lions Club.
He donated over 180 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross, Miller Blood Center.
He enjoyed reading, gardening, baseball, basketball, football and bowling.
Surviving in addition to his widow are a daughter, the Rev. Heidi M. Silliman, with whom he resided; two sons, David C., and his wife, Donna, of Bethlehem, and Timothy S. of Slatington; a sister, Mary M. Stroup of Mahoning Township; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by nine sisters, Alice Mae, Arlene Mildred, Helen Lucy, Lavina Jane, Catherine, Bessie Elizabeth, Martha Marian, Laura Agnes and Sarah Ann; and four brothers, William James, Milton Peter, Samuel Abraham Jr. and Jacob Richard.
Service: Memorial service 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 14, Salem United Methodist Church, Aquashicola, with the Rev. Deborah McLean officiating. Private interment, Towamensing Cemetery, Palmerton.
