Mrs. Susan M. Brong, 55, of Lehighton, died Sunday, April 1, in the Palmerton Hospital after a courageous 20-year battle with a brain tumor. She was the wife of Bill Brong.
They observed their 24th wedding anniversary in June.
She was a special education teacher in the Pleasant Valley School District for the past 34 years.Born in Abington, she was a daughter of Elaine (Benz) Vanderslice of Telford and the late Jack Vanderslice.
She was a graduate of Upper Dublin High School and Bloomsburg University, and earned a master's degree from East Stroudsburg University. While at Pleasant Valley, she was a former softball coach and ski club advisor and was involved in Special Olympics.
The deceased loved gardening, reading and spending time with her family. She was a devoted wife and mother and a great supporter of all of her children's activities.
Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are a son, Kyle A., a graduate of Dartmouth College; two daughters, Julie A., who will be a 2012 graduate of Penn State University, and Christina E., who will be a 2013 graduate of Penn State; a sister Judy, wife of Paul Schwartz of Northampton; two brothers, David, and his wife, Leanne, of Hatboro, and Karl, and his wife, Nell, of Horsham; a sister-in-law, Debbie Vanderslice Kirkland, and her husband, John, of Perkasie; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Jack Jr.
Service: Funeral service 11 a.m. Thursday, April 5, Zion United Church of Christ, Lehighton, with the Rev. Allen Heckman officiating. Interment, Buena Vista Cemetery, Brodheadsville. Call 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Kresge Funeral Home, 1763 Rt. 209, Brodheadsville, and 10-11 a.m. Thursday in the church. A tribute fund to benefit the Palmerton Hospital Med/Surgery Unit has been set up in Susan's name.
