 Ernest F. Hoffner, 94, of Interchange Road, Lehighton, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 19, in The Village at Palmerton. - He was the husband of the late Dorothy L. "Fluff" (Griffith) Hoffner, who died in 1999.
Prior to retiring, he was a sales representative for the Prudential Insurance Company. He was previously employed by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation.Born in Lehighton, he was a son of the late William A. and Eva Mae (Heffner) Hoffner, and a stepson of the late Hilda (Bock) Hoffner.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, having attained the rank of captain. He received the Purple Heart Medal, the Combat Infantryman's Badge and a Bronze Star after engaging the enemy on the D-Day invasion of France during the European Theater of Operations.
He later was taken as a POW and served in the German POW Camp in Hammelburg, Germany. After his release, he was later activated as a 1st Lieutenant and served during the Korean Conflict.
Hoffner attended Moravian College and graduated from Bethlehem Business School.
He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lehighton, the Lehighton American Legion Post 314 and its World War II Last Man's Club, the Lehighton AMVETS Post and the Beaver Run Rod and and Gun Club.
The deceased was a life member of Orioles Nest No. 183 and Lehigh Fire Company No. 1, both of Lehighton.
A 32nd degree Mason, he belonged ot F. and A.M. Lodge No. 621, Lehighton, and the Lehigh Consistory, Valley of Allentown.
Surviving are a daughter, Karin S., wife of Daniel Bock of Easthampton, Mass.; a son, Kris W.M., and his wife, Marian, of Palmerton; three grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
He was also predeceased by a granddaughter, Alissa Bock; and a brother Donald.
Service: Funeral service 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, Andrew P. Ovsak Funeral Home, Fourth and Iron streets, Lehighton, with the Rev. Anthony P. Pagotto officiating. Interment with full military honors, Lehighton Cemetery, under direction of Lehighton Area UVO. Call 6-8 p.m. Friday and 10-11 a.m. Saturday.
