Herbert G. "Herbie" Helmer, 89, of Unionville Rd., Jim Thorpe died Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Miner's Memorial Hospital Coaldale. He was the husband of Dorothy M. (McFarland) Helmer. They were married on July 2, 1983. |
Born in Unionville he was a son of the late Henry C. and Mary Agnes (Strohl) Helmer.
He served as a Pvt. 1st. Class in the U.S. Army.
He worked as a trackman for the PB&NE Railroad of Bethlehem Steel for over 35 years before retiring.
He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church of Penn Forest.
He was a lifetime member of the Penn Forest Vol. Fire Co. #1. He was a member of the Carbon Lodge 242 Free & Accepted Masons of Jim Thorpe. He was a lifetime member of the Beaver Run Rod & Gun Club.
Besides his wife he is survived by daughters, Barb, wife of Smokey Beers of Penn Forest, Beatrice, partner of Bruce Highland of Jim Thorpe, Paulette, wife of Joe Rauch of Penn Forest, Brenda, wife of Mike Hricik of Lehighton, and Robin, wife of Rueben Heydt of Penn Forest; sons, Edward Koons and partner Gerry of Bethlehem, Robert Koons and wife Denise of Palmerton, John Koons and wife Barb of Penn Forest; 25 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a grandson Patrick Koons; and 12 brothers and sisters.
Services: will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 25, at Christ Lutheran Church, 189 Church Rd, Penn Forest, Jim Thorpe. Call 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Melber Funeral Home, 524 Center St., Jim Thorpe, and 10-11 a.m. Monday at the church. Interment with military honors will be in Christ Memorial Park at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name may be sent to his church.
