Brother Robert C. 'Sam' Getter
Brother Robert C. "Sam" Getter, 76, of Leesburg, FL, formerly of Lehighton, was called off from labor with his loving wife, Karen M. (Everett) Getter, on July 1 in Tampa, FL. They were married for 53 years on May 31, 2016.
Born in Lehighton, he was a son of the late Samuel H. and Marguerite C. (Mertz) Getter. He was a 1957 graduate of Lehighton Area High School in 1957. Prior to retiring, he was a truck driver for Consolidated Freightways, and was a member of Teamsters Union locals 773, 229 and 79.Sam and Karen formerly owned Sam's University Inn.
He served our country with the U.S. Navy, attaining the rank of 3rd class petty officer.
Getter was a former member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Big Creek, and F. & A.M. Lodge 621, Lehighton; and held memberships in Elwood Miller AMVETS Post 106, Lehighton, the Eagles Aerie Lodge No. 4273, Ohahumpka, FL, and Lehigh Lodge No. 326, Macungie.
In Florida, he was a member of the Bahia Shrine, where he served as the liaison to the Bahia Shrine Center for the Shriners Circus, and served as transport coordinator for the Shriners Children's Hospital and as the group captain for the annual Paper Crusade for the Shriners Hospital.
Sam and his wife were very active in the Lake County Shrine Club. He served on the board of directors for three years; was treasurer of the Mariners Unit; drove the antique fire truck in parades; managed Monday night bingo; and worked the monthly country pancake breakfast. He also served as president of the Hawthorne High Twelve Club No. 547 and served as the Wolcat representative.
Sam usually took the lead in clearing the waterways for the Hawthorne Boat Club. He developed and installed an aeration system in the Hawthorne Marina and participated in the Lake County Water Authority testing program for the Palatlaka River.
He and his wife worked very hard in making the Hawthorne Community Rummage Sale a success and did anything with a smile.
He was an avid Tampa Bay fan.
Surviving are three daughters, Bobbi-Jo, wife of Paul Willett in Florida, and Cynthia, wife of Bradley May, and Amanda, wife of Larry Keller Jr., both of Lehighton; two granddaughters, Mariah and Avery; four grandsons, Bradley Jr., Ben, Jack and Cale; two stepgrandsons, Noah and Malachi King; and nieces and nephews.
His wife Karen & their son, "Sammy," joined him in God's arms on July 1.
He was also preceded in death by a stepgrandson, Jonah King.
Service: Celebration of Life service 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 23, Salem Bible Fellowship Church, 1105 Fredericks Grove Rd., Lehighton, with the Rev. Robert Johnson II officiating. Interment with full military honors, Gnaden Huetten Cemetery, Lehighton, under direction of Lehighton Area UVO, followed by joint Masonic services for Sam and his son. Call 8:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 23, in the church.
