Lawrence S. "Larry" Close, 88, of Albrightsville, passed away on Friday, June 9, in his home. He was the loving husband of Susanne (Wenger) Close. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on Oct. 4, 2016.
Born in Chestnut Hill, PA, on April 22, 1929, he was a son of late L. Paul and Constance (Schell) Close.
He graduated from Penn State before pursuing a career with Sinclair Oil.
He served our country with dedication and courage in the Korean War and was the recipient of four Bronze Stars.
He retired to Albrightsville in 1989 and was a member of St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, Lake Harmony.
Larry enjoyed fishing, hiking, walking and the outdoors. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 294, Albrightsville.
Larry served on the Board of Directors at Towamensing Trails and was on the Security Committee for 15 years.
He was president of the Penn Senior Center for four years. He was active in the community and won many gold medals in the Carbon County Senior Games. At age 71, he earned a silver medal in the one mile run at the Pennsylvania Senior Games.
We have been blessed to have Larry in our lives. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife Susanne; his daughters, Linda Close, and her husband, Douglas Scott, of Perkasie, and Beth Rowan, and her husband, Robert Rowan, of Rose Valley.
He is also survived by two brothers, Richard Close, and his wife, Tilly, of Wayland, MA, and William Close of New York, N.Y.; two sisters, Nancy Edwards of Lansdale and Sister Charlotte Close of Philadelphia; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by four siblings, David, Joan, Fred, and Patricia.
Service: Christian Mass 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 20, St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, 2111 N. Lake Dr., Lake Harmony, PA 18624. Private interment at convenience of family. Call 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the church. Arrangements by Gower Funeral Home & Crematory, Rt. 209, Gilbert.
