News Death Notice
MILLER, Jan Aileen Augenstein Passed away September 11, 2013 at home in Albuquerque with her husband Lee by her side. She had been a resident of Albuquerque for almost twenty years. Jan was born April 4, 1939 in Hamilton, Ohio, where she lived until leaving for college at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. After college she moved to San Francisco, CA to teach elementary school. From there she moved to Guam, where she taught school and worked in a jewelry store. Returning to Ohio two years later, she completed a Master's degree at Miami University. In 1970 she met her future husband, Lee Miller, on March 30th. On May 30th they were married. Jan then went to Italy for an opera workshop, while Lee went to Lawrence, KS to the University of Kansas, to finish his doctoral dissertation. At the end of the summer the two newlyweds returned to their house that was being built in the countryside near Oxford. They lived there until 1994 and then, now retired, they moved to Albuquerque. Jan had a marvelous lyric soprano voice and loved to sing, especially musicals. She performed in Fiddler on the Roof, Jacque Brell is Alive and Living in Paris, and Oklahoma, among others. She loved gardening, making greeting cards for friends and family and traveling with her husband to new places around the world. During these travels they visited all seven continents and more than 100 countries. Jan was special with an effervescence that made everyone feel good. She was a lady with élan. She was interested in everything and always focused on others, never herself. Above all, she was a very loving person who loved to laugh, and this laugh was infectious, drawing people to her. Preceding here in death were her parents, Harold and Marjorie Augenstein of Hamilton, OH, except for a few years when they came to Albuquerque. She is survived by her loving husband, Lee, and her brother, Nick and his wife Sue of Grants, NM, and several nieces and nephews. After cremation her ashes are to be placed in the new Columbarium at Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church, which is located at 5301 Ponderosa Avenue NE. A Memorial Service will be held at the church on September 21, 2013 at 11 am. In lieu of flowers it is requested that contributions be made in her name to Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church.
