GANT-MITCHELL Josie Lee Taylor



Mrs. Josie Lee Taylor Gant-Mitchell transitioned into eternal life on June 18, 2014.

Born in Goshen Springs, a tiny hamlet just outside Canton, Mississippi, on January 17, 1926, Mrs. Gant-Mitchell was one of eight children born to Tinnie (Myers) and Stewart Taylor.

Mrs. Gant-Mitchell continued residing in Goshen Springs until early adolescence. After which, she moved to Memphis, TN, where she attended "The Great Booker T." Washington High School. Upon graduating in 1946, she continued her education at a Memphis business college.

In February 1948, Mrs. Gant-Mitchell married Harry Gant. In search of better employment opportunities, the young couple relocated to Toledo, OH in September 1948.

Once in Toledo, the Gants joined Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of the Reverend Elijah Benton. While at Mt. Zion, Mrs. Gant-Mitchell served in a number of capacities including church secretary; member, usher board; member, Board of Christian Education and as Sunday School Teacher.

In 1962, again in search of greater employments opportunities, the Gants relocated to Los Angeles, California. While there, they united with the Trinity Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of the Reverend Elliot J. Mason. The two remained in California for the next 30 years. She was employed with the Los Angeles Council of Churches National Housing Ministries where she served as supervisor at the Good Shepard Manor Senior Citizen Residence.

After the death of her husband, Harry, Mrs. Gant-Mitchell returned to Toledo in 1992, and joined the United Missionary Baptist Church. She became an active member of the Deaconess Board.

She later married Mr. Harley Mitchell.

Mrs. Gant-Mitchell is survived by sisters, Dorothy Mae Anderson and Martha Jean Barber, both of Chicago, IL; daughters, Barbara Jean (Darryl Maxwell) Gant-Maxwell, Bernadine (Gregory Pollard) Gant-Pollard, both of Los Angeles, CA; special niece, Ruth Williams, Hot Springs, CA; stepchildren, Vivian Garrett, Memphis, TN and Terry (Cheryl) Mitchell, Toledo, OH, and special friend, Mr. Walter Brownridge, Milwaukee, WI.

Mrs. Gant-Mitchell was predeceased by both parents, Tinnie and Stewart Taylor; husbands, Harry Gant and Harley Mitchell; brothers, Ulysses, Nathaniel, Elemuel, Falton, Richard; sister, Ruby Lee.

Visitation will be Friday 6-8 p.m., Dale-Riggs Funeral Home Chapel, 572 Nebraska Ave. Wake services will be Saturday, 11 a.m. followed by funeral services at 12 noon. United Missionary Baptist Church, 2705 Monroe Street. The Rev. Robert G. Bass, Officiant. Internment, The Historic Woodlawn Cemetery.

The family of the late Mrs. Josie Lee Taylor Gant-Mitchell wishes to acknowledge with grateful appreciation the wonderful care and support that the family received during her illness. Special and heartfelt thanks is extended to Dr. B.G. Shreenivas, Medical Director of Gentiva Hospice Care, Chicago, IL.
