Bill W. "John McKnight"



After a courageous battle with liver cancer, Bill Schroeder (radio personality "John McKnight") passed away Friday, November 22, 2013, in his home surrounded by his partner and close

family. Bill, a longtime Old West End resident, was born January 1, 1945, in Toledo and graduated from Jesup W. Scott High School in 1964.

He attended the University of Toledo before entering the U.S. Air Force, where he was stationed at Nellis AFB,

Nevada during the Vietnam War. Before his honorable discharge as a sergeant, he began his career in broadcasting in Las Vegas. After returning to Toledo, Bill was an on-air radio personality, production director, voiced radio ads, and emceed

numerous events throughout greater Toledo. He worked for numerous radio stations in Toledo. Two of his very popular radio shows were "PM Gold" and "Desperate and Dateless" which aired on WOHO.

Through early detection, Bill was diagnosed with

prostate cancer, which made it treatable. He became an advocate for early testing and detection for prostate cancer and in 1998, Bill was

appointed the Director of Communications for the American Cancer Society in Northwest Ohio.

Bill loved the Old West End and was a strong supporter of the Old West End Association. He never was at a loss for words and had such an outgoing personality, which was evident with all the lives he touched.

He is preceded in death by his father, John C. Schroeder; mother, Jane M. (Hackett) Schroeder Ruhfel, and step-father, Al Ruhfel. Bill is

survived by his partner of 34 years, Lawrence Stine; brothers, John (Karen) Schroeder, Michael (Cheryl) Schroeder, and Richard (Gretchen) Schroeder; nine nieces and nephews, and twenty great- nieces and nephews.

Bill's family would like to thank Nita and Heather from Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their care.

The family will receive guests Saturday, December 7, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church (434 Western Ave.) after 10 a.m. followed by Memorial Mass at 11 a.m.
