Douglas R. Valentine, 72, of Bowling Green, Ohio departed this life on April 19, 2013.
Doug was born October 13, 1940, in Bowling Green, Ohio to the late Charles "Debs" and Kathryn A. (Tripp) Valentine.
Doug was a graduate of Bowling Green High School and later earned his Master's Plumber and HVAC licenses. He was a self-employed builder, developer, and former mayoral candidate committed to improving the surroundings for others in the City of Bowling Green. He was instrumental for the initial placement of utilities (sewer, water and electricity) on the eastside of Bowling Green (formerly known as "Hog Town"). He was the proud owner of many local businesses and especially the DK Enterprises (Landfill) known to do work "pro-bono" for the Wood County Airport and other area organizations. He was Trustee of the Ohio Construction Demolition Board. He was a member of the Local #50 Plumber's Union, BGSU President's Club, National Rifle Association, and the Republican Party. He had his license to fly helicopters. He was known to donate time to flying his Belle "Chopper" in hopes of finding reported missing persons. He was instrumental in the startup of the Cocoon Shelter. He also made sure the BG Montessori School had a wonderful new addition making sure Maple Street was vacated and closed. He felt very strongly about donating to local charities: Cherry Street Mission, Habitat for Humanity, and the Special Olympics
. He was a great supporter of Bowling Green's Little League Baseball. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing at James Bay Outfitters in Cochrane, Ontario. He also made sure each grave was dignified with a flag at the pauper's cemetery at the former old folks' home now known as the Wood County Historical Society. In 2009, Doug was honored by the BG Chamber of Commerce as BG's Outstanding Citizen. He also enjoyed being with his family. He will be greatly missed.
Surviving are five daughters, Vicky Valentine Adler (Michael), Bowling Green, OH, Debbie (Mike) Heim, Hendersonville, NC, Dawn Baker of Georgia, Lori (Jeff) Feasel, Port Orange, FL, Lisa Hoverson (Tom), Perrysburg, OH; two sons, Dudley (Tammy) Schrader of Maine, and Greg Hoverson of Bowling Green, OH; 17 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; special friend, Peggy Hancock; former wives, Marilyn Greunke, Toledo, OH and Ruth Ann Hawn of Indiana; his sister, Pat (Gerald) Carrier, New York; sister-in-law, Phyllis Valentine, and brother-in-law, Leroy Josephsen; three brothers, Ned (Elaine) and Mark (Linda) Valentine all of Bowling Green, Ohio, and Paul (JoAnn) of Bonita Springs, Florida. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Dudley, Dallas, Duane; sister, Nancy Josephsen, and a daughter-in-law, Lucie Hoverson.
Visitation will be Thursday, April 25, 2013, from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Deck-Hanneman Funeral Home & Crematory, 1460 W. Wooster Street, PO Box 648, Bowling Green, OH 43402. Tele: 419/352-2171. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday, April 26, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. in the Remembrance Chapel of the funeral home with burial to follow in the Portage Cemetery.
