Edward Carl Martensen, age 90, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away February 15, 2013, at Flower Hospital. He was born January 20, 1923, to Emil Carl and Mary Catherine (Patton) Martensen. He married his beloved wife Alma Marie (Kramp) on March 6, 1943, they were married 43 years until Alma passed away January 30, 1987.

Edward was a City of Toledo Firefighter from 1952 until retiring July 4, 1980. He began his career at Station 2, served at stations 1, 18, 12 and retired from station 4. Edward served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in WWII from 1943-1945 as an Aerial Gunner on a B-25 Bomber flying 70 missions over Italy, France and Germany attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant. He was awarded the Air Medal, 6 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart. He was an accomplished skilled tradesman with mechanical work, plastering, painting, plumbing, electrical and small engine repair.

He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church where he participated the Feed Your Neighbor program. He was also a member of American Legion Walter Weller Post 135. Other memberships include the Zenobia Shriners, Rubicon Lodge No. 0237 Ancient Accepted Order of Scottish Rite, and Toledo Fire Department Retirees Assn. He belonged to the Eleanor Kahle Senior Senior Center where he spent many happy hours with friends, especially his buddies in the pool room.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Marie; his father, Emil Carl Martensen, and mother, Mary Catherine Martensen (Patton); sister, Marie Turner; infant brother, and infant daughter, Mary Vera.

He is survived by his daughter, Karen Sue Martensen; son, Burton Martensen; son-in-law, Eugene Fodor; best friend, Don Smith, and beloved cat, Shortie.

Friends will be received at Blanchard-Strabler Funeral Home (1163 W. Sylvania at Lockwood, 419-269-1111) on Tuesday from 2:00-8:00 p.m. where Last Alarm Services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Services will begin at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Funeral Home and proceed to St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church for the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. After proceeding past #18's Fire Station for a final salute, burial with full Military Honors will follow at Toledo Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions in his memory be made to the Eleanor Kahle Senior Center.
