Esther Jones

JONES

Esther B.

With loving family gathered close, Esther B. Jones passed away on December 29, 2013. She was the daughter of Irva (Carter) Barrett and Ivan H. Barrett. Esther was born on November 13, 1921, in a farmhouse in Amboy Township, Fulton County, Ohio. As a child on the farm, she loved the land, the animals and the flowers and to her last days she had flowers in her yard and live flowers in her home.

Esther knew from a very young age that she wanted to become a nurse, and in 1942, she graduated as a registered nurse from Toledo Hospital School of Nursing. During that time, she met a young intern, who would become her future husband, Dr. Charles F. Jones of Lynchburg, Virginia. Following graduation, and with Dr. Jones serving in the army, she worked in San Diego and while there was

offered a teaching position at Toledo State Hospital, which she accepted. In 1946, she married and the young couple moved to Minneapolis, where Dr. Jones served his residency at the University of Minnesota. Esther worked in the nursery and cared for many infants in the two years they were in residence. The couple returned to Toledo and started their family and Esther became a full time mother.

Mrs. Jones was an active member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. She held positions in the Women's

Society and was the church financial secretary for 20 years. In addition, she was a life member of the Toledo Hospital Alumna Association, the Flower Hospital Auxiliary and a 60 year member of the Auxiliary to the Academy of Medicine.

Great pleasure came from watching her children and grandchildren grow into adulthood.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen (Richard) Plaine of Sidney, Ohio, and her son, D. Michael (Mary Ellen) Jones of Sylvania, Ohio. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Charles Plaine, Lauren Plaine, Garrett Jones, Julia Jones and Griffin Jones. Esther was preceded in death by her

beloved husband, Charles; her parents, Ivan and Irva Barrett, and her brother, Bernard Barrett, along with many dear friends.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to express their sympathy in Esther's name are asked to make contributions to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, the Parkinson's Foundation or the Lupus Foundation. A private service will be held with

internment to follow in the Amboy Township cemetery. To send the family online condolences, please visit
