Frederick O. Koester, formerly of Genoa, died March 9, 2013, after more than a century. Fritz was born to Anthony F. Koester and Catherine Iowa Koester on September 2, 1912, in Toledo. He was married in 1940 to Dorothy Myers, of Genoa, for 40 years and she preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Elmer Koester, and his sister, Dorothy Koester Swinghammer.

He is survived by his four children, Kay Koester (John) Eberth of Genoa, Frederick A. (Karen) Koester of Northwood, Linda Koester Younker, of Gibsonburg, and James R. Koester (Sue) of Cypress Inn. TN; 5 grandchildren, Kara (Sherry) Koester, Kami Koester (Steve) Claus, Cale Koester, Miles Koester, and Jay Younker, and great-grandson, Mitchell Claus.

He graduated Riverview (MI) High School in 1933 where he played many sports. He became an amateur boxer and won the Toledo Golden Gloves Welterweight Championship in the late 1930's.

He began playing the drums in a high school band and eventually formed a dance band that played at many local dance halls, gymnasiums, and VFW posts as well as for weddings and school benefits through the 1970's. He especially loved the music of the big bands of the 1940's.

He was a 39-year employee of Gulf Oil Co. He maintained membership in the Masons for 72 years.

Friends may call at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Millbury Chapel, 1111 Woodville Rd. on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, from 3:00-9:00 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, March 14, 2013, at St. John's United Church of Christ, 1213 Washington St. Genoa, OH 43430 where the family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until funeral services at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Clay Township Cemetery. Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are asked to consider, Otterbein Portage Valley, 20311 Pemberville Rd., Pemberville, OH 43450, or St. Johns UCC, 1213 Washington St., Genoa, OH 43430.

Fred and family-So sorry to hear of your loss. I think it's hard to lose a parent, no matter what age. I think your dad and his band played for my folks' 50th wedding anniversary party!

He was an amazing man and led life to the fullest. I'm so happy that we all got together for his 100th birthday. I'll always remember Uncle Fritz.
