John Edward Murphy Sr.

MURPHY

John Edward Senior

John Edward Murphy Senior was born on September 6, 1943, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Raymond C. Murphy and Alice (Lynch) Murphy. His early years were spent with his younger brother Daniel in Omaha, Nebraska, and also South Bend, Indiana. While living in South Bend, John became an avid Notre Dame fan, a passion that he had for the rest of his life.

His family moved to Toledo, Ohio, in 1960. John attended Central High School where he excelled in cross county and track. He ran a 4:26 mile while attending Central High School. He won a track scholarship to Miami University. He recently was inducted into the Central Catholic Hall of Fame, an honor that he and his family were very proud of.

John married Barbara L. Solomon in 1962. They had five children- Renee Marie, Deborah Lynn, John Edward Jr., Kevin Shaw, and Michael Charles.

John worked in construction during the early years of his marriage. He started working for the Lucas County Port of Toledo in 1978. He was a crane supervisor until just a few months before his death. He operated the Big Lucas and the Little Lucas cranes and also learned late in his life to operate the computerized Liebherr cranes. He dedicated many years of his life to his work and established a reputation of dependability and skill. He was commonly referred to as "the surgeon of the Great Lakes," for his uncanny skill in operating heavy cranes with precision and expertise.

John married Barbara E. Murphy on February 14, 1998. Both John and Barb enjoyed the last fifteen years being with each other and sharing their combined families of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. John cherished the friendship he had with his brother, Dan and his wife Gloria.

John was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather. He supported his children Renee, Debbie, Johnny, Kevin, and Michael through their many school activities and sports events. He was by far and large the loudest voice in the crowd, cheering them on. Later in his life he also supported his stepson Jacob Smock and also supported his grandchildren at their activities. He was a strong presence in his family, a true patriarch. He was generous with advice and with hugs and always made his children, stepchildren, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren feel loved and nurtured. He was a good friend to many and had a gift for making people feel cherished.

John was a member of All Saints Parish in Rossford, Ohio. He was active on Christ Renews His Parish teams and in recent years found true fellowship in his friendships through Teams of Our Lady.

John left us all with a legacy of love and devotion to God and family. We have been blessed.

John was preceded in death by his daughter, Deborah Lynn Murphy; his mother, Alice Murphy, and his father, Raymond Murphy.
