MALHOIT

John R. "Jack"

John R. "Jack" Malhoit, age 83, passed away Wednesday, January 9, 2013. He was born July 6, 1929, in Assumption, Illinois to John D. and Edith Malhoit. He graduated from Northwestern University in 1950 where he earned his Bachelor Degree in Music; and, where he met the love of his life, Sally Bassett of Beloit, Wisconsin.

He first came to Toledo, right after graduation, to become the organist at Rosary Cathedral. Then, while serving in the U.S. military, Sergeant Malhoit married Sally and later returned to Toledo just to visit friends. They never left. Jack went to work as the development Director of Mary Manse College. He also continued his career in liturgical music as organist and choir director at churches all over the city. Couples approached him regularly to thank him for the beautiful music he had provided at their weddings. His award-winning Gesu Ensemble distinguished itself taking first place 2 years in a row in diocesan-wide competition.

In retirement, he said that he just wanted to work 40 hours a week so he started Malhoit Stationers, a printing shop specializing in wedding invitations, which he owned and operated for more than 20 years. When he wasn't working or playing a church service, he loved gardening and being outside.

Jack had an unconditional love for family and friends. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He indulged his children making sure that all went to college and that each one had a trade, a hobby, and a musical instrument.

He is missed by Sally, his wife of 61 years; sisters, Suzanne and Babs; children, Christopher, Alison (Robert) Pinkelman, Jonathan (Barb), Darrah (Mick) Nowak, Kenwyn (Joseph) Olin, Jocelyn, Hilary (John) Lindsay, Camila (Mark) DiPietro; grandchildren, Deirdre, Lauren, Ian, Joel, John, Kyle, Shannon, Kelsey, Ashley, Austin, Madeline, Keely, Robert, Domenic, Isabella, Liam, Sarah; great grandchildren Mac, Lo, and Sully.
