Dr. Karl Maurice Beck, 91, of Sylvania, OH, formerly of Lake Bluff, IL, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2013, at Kingston Residence. He was born June 16, 1922, in Belleville, IL, to Alice Sharp Finney and John Beck. After receiving a Bachelor's degree from Monmouth College in IL ('43) and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois
in 1948, Karl spent his career as a
research chemist for Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago. He had over 40 publications and 6 patents in food technology/ artificial sweeteners to his name. He also gave many talks and was admired for his wit and
wisdom. Karl spent his most valued leisure time traveling/ participating in activities with his family, and
sailing in his Sunfish off the beach in Lake Bluff.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Anna W. Beck; his daughter, Susan Gobel Ingram; brothers, Wilson "Becky" Beck of Belleville, IL, and Donald Beck of Springfield, IL. Karl is survived by his son, Karl Allen (Sandy) Beck;
daughter, Laura (Charles) Anderson; six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, September 28, 2013, at the Sylvania United Church of Christ, 7240 Erie St., Sylvania, OH, 43560, with a light supper following the service.
