Robert Kirk

KIRK

Robert W.

Robert W. "Bob" Kirk, 90, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 27, 2014, at Birchaven Village. He was born in Fostoria on August 21, 1923, to Roland and Beckham (Bond) and was a long-time resident of Findlay.

A veteran with the United States Navy, Bob was assigned to the USS Mitchell (DE-43) during WWII. Bob's military service took him through the Pacific Theater, where he would earn the rank of Quartermaster Third Class. His military honors included the American Area Service Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon (8 Stars), Philippine Liberation Ribbon (2 Stars), Good

Conduct Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal.

Bob studied engineering at the University of Toledo and, following his military service, would go on to make his mark in the business world. Beginning with Kirk Bros. in 1969, which he founded with his sons, Bob was always leading the charge to do things bigger and better. His ambition would ultimately lead to the formation of OHM Corp., which would become one of the largest environmental and emergency response firms in the country. Other family businesses would follow and, even after his retirement, Bob was always on hand to offer words of encouragement and support.

Throughout his life, Bob always believed in making the world a better place. He served on the boards of numerous charities within the community and gave generously of his time, treasure and talents. Bob's charitable causes were as wide-ranging as his professional accomplishments, and focused on everything from at-risk youth to prisoner rehabilitation. Although he never looked for praise, Tiffin University named Bob the Business Leader of the Year in 1986.

Bob is survived by Theresa Kirk (Wonderly), his loving wife for over 67 years, and five children, James (Rebecca) Kirk; Joseph (Diana) Kirk; Rebecca Sue (Dirk) Ewing; Richard (Sabrina) Kirk, and Catherine (Dennis) Smith. A son, William Kirk, preceded him in death. Bob was also blessed with 23 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren, all of whom are left with wonderful memories of his gentle and caring way.

Visitation will be from 1:00-3:00 p.m. and 5:00-7:00 p.m., with a Rosary Service at 6:30 p.m., on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at the Coldren-Crates Funeral Home, Findlay. A Mass of Christian Burial, to be officiated by Monsignor Michael Hohenbrink, is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 3, 2014, at the St. Michael the Archangel Parish (Bright Road). Burial, with full military honors from the Hancock County Veterans Memorial Squad, will follow at Knollcrest Cemetery, Arcadia. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in Bob's name be made to St. Michael the Archangel Parish Fund. Online condolences may be expressed via
