Robert A. Olender, 92, died peacefully Friday, May 30, 2014, at his residence in Sunset House.
Bob was born June 14, 1921, to Pauline (Krzemska) and Anthony Olender. A devout Catholic, Bob graduated from St. Theresa's grade school, where he met the love of his life and future wife, Virginia Fial (Ginny), and Central Catholic high, class of '39.
, Bob served with the 75th Army Infantry in the Pacific earning two bronze stars
. Six weeks after discharge, he married Ginny at St. Theresa's Church. Bob was a draftsman for several Toledo firms - Owens Illinois, AP Parts and finally retiring from SSOE. He was a parishioner of St. Johns Point Place and later St. Pius. He was a volunteer for many area programs including St. Vincent DePaul and made crosses each year for the first communicants at St. Pius. Bob was a long time member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.
After retirement, he and Ginny traveled the world. He enjoyed painting watercolors and, of course, spent as much time as possible golfing. Thanks to special neighbors, Jim and Peg Tichy, he had the privilege of participating in the Honor Flight program for veterans.
"Big Bad Bob" as he referred to himself was anything but. He was a kind, good hearted man, a devoted husband, a wonderful father, loving grandfather and a true friend.
Bob is survived by daughters, Karen (Bill) Pinsky, Mary Beth Olender (John Walczak), Kathleen (Marty) McCabe; grandchildren, BJ Pinsky, Rachel Cail, Jimmy (Sammi) Henderson, Danny Henderson, Molly McCabe, Megan McCabe and four great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ginny and their daughter, Jeanette Olender.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks to the Sunset staffers for their dedication and care. Honoring his wish, Bob's remains have been donated to the UT Medical Center. A memorial service celebrating his life is scheduled for June 28, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Pius Church; luncheon following.
