Wayne R. Riedel, 93, of Ottawa Lake, Michigan passed away Thursday, March 13, 2014, at Blissfield Place, where he received extraordinary and compassionate care for the past year. He was born October 27, 1920, in New Washington, Ohio to parents Jesse and Minnie (Magsig) Riedel.
Wayne was a 1941 graduate of Tiffin University in Accounting. He served his country during WWII
as a member of the United States Coast Guard. He worked for 39 years for General Motors
, Chevrolet Division, starting in the Finance Department and later as a Supervisor of Employee Benefits; retiring in 1980. He was a huge Ohio State University
fan and rarely missed watching every football and basketball game. His other pastime was flower and vegetable gardening and at 92, he was featured as Gardener of the Week by The Toledo Blade. During the past year, the "fruits of his labor" were enjoyed by residents of Blissfield Place, where he had a garden plot.
He was a member of Olivet Lutheran Church since 1950 and served as an usher, Sunday school teacher, home communion server and on a call committee. In addition, he was a charter member and the treasurer of the Olivet Leisure League for 33 years.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Wayne's Hospice nurse and to the entire staff of Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their dedication and care these past three months.
Left to cherish his memory is daughter, Cynthia Riedel of Ida, MI; son, Jeffrey (Lori) Riedel of Tecumseh, MI; grandchildren, Ryan (Kristen) and Ross Riedel; sisters, Jeanette Naufzinger and Virginia Meister, and brother, Daryl Riedel. He is also survived by longtime family friend, Judy Paluck. Wayne was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Doris, in 2012 and brothers, Gerald and Calmer.
Friends may call at Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 N. Main Street, Sylvania, OH Sunday, March 16, 2014, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The funeral ceremony will be conducted at Olivet Lutheran Church, 5840 Monroe Street, Sylvania on Monday, March 17, at 11 a.m., where Wayne's body will lie in state one hour prior. Interment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park.
