Douglas J. LaPlante, 59 years, of Toledo, OH passed away Monday, June 17, 2013, at home surrounded by family after a yearlong battle with cancer. The son of Lionel and Angela (Lewis) LaPlante he was born June 29, 1953, in Monroe, MI.
He attended St. Joseph's Catholic School, Erie Mason High School where he was active in football and baseball, and Monroe Community College.
Doug married Diane Rometski October 12, 1973, and would have celebrated their 40th anniversary in October. Doug and Diane had 2 children, son, Ryan and daughter, Laura. He was employed by Seaway Foodtown for 32 years and worked at several locations over the years. He was produce manager at the Perrysburg location in 2003 when the company closed. Doug began selling cars at Northtowne Chevrolet in 2003 and also worked at McNeill Chevrolet in Swanton, retiring in 2012 from Stanford Allen Chevrolet/Cadillac in Monroe, MI.
Doug was active in the Washington Local School District where he coached little league baseball and girls softball. He was active in his children's high school band program with the Whitmer Band Boosters from 1991-98, and also served as President.
Doug was a loving husband and devoted father. He is survived by his wife, Diane; daughter, Laura and husband Sal Bhimji; grandson, Evan; his mother, Angela; brother, Howard (Diane) LaPlante; sister, Carol LaPlante; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Frank and Gloria Rometski; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Frank and Debbie Rome, and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Ryan; his father, Lionel, and his brother, Jeff.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 19, 2013, from 2 until 8 p.m. in Urbanski's Bedford Funeral Chapel, 8300 Lewis Avenue Temperance, MI. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, June 20 at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Erie, MI where he will lie in state after 10 a.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to The Whitmer Band & Orchestra or St. Joseph's Church.
