Fredric George Barba

1940 - 2012 Obituary Condolences
(NEWS ARTICLE) TIFFIN -- Fredric George Barba, who served four years as treasurer for Perrysburg Exempted School District before retiring in 2005 and held similar posts for the Tiffin and North Baltimore schools, died Thursday at Blanchard Valley Hospital in Findlay. He was 72.

The cause of death was liver failure, said his wife of 20 years, Janis Hudson Barba.

Mr. Barba was hired by Perrysburg in November, 2001, after he held the treasurer's position for the Tiffin City Schools for 11 years. He retired in February, 2005.

His wife said Mr. Barba was particularly proud that Perrysburg voters approved a tax issue while he worked with the district.

Mr. Barba was born Feb. 7, 1940, in Metamora, Ohio, and graduated from St. Mary's High School in nearby Assumption.

His father died when he was 7, leaving his mother to raise him and his two siblings.

As a teenager, he went to work for Malone Funeral Home in Metamora after its owner, Larry Malone, took him under his wing, Mrs. Barba said. He also worked on several farms.

"He said his mother was very willing to send him out to work for others," she said.

He enlisted in the Army Reserves in 1961 and served until 1966, the same year he graduated from Davis Business College in Toledo with a degree in business, said his son Steven Barba.

He began his career in accounting with Hausman Steel in Toledo in 1967 and later went to work for Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. in Findlay, his son said.

He left Cooper for a job with the North Baltimore school district.

He collected books, mostly on history and the outdoors.

"He had a tremendous mind for historical facts, sports, and cars," Mrs. Barba said.

His son recalled his father's love of travel, primarily to the Traverse Bay and Sault Ste. Marie areas of northern Michigan.

He is survived by his wife, Janis Barba, sons Steven and Scott Barba, daughters Stephannie Barba and Stacy Corbin, stepson, Richard Hudson, stepdaughters, Cheryl Hudson Eyster and Michelle Hudson-Ross, 10 grandchildren, one great-grandson, and a sister, Judith Ott.

Visitation is to be Tuesday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Weigel Funeral Home, Metamora, where a vigil service is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Prayers are to be said Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Resurrection at 11 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Assumption.

Memorials are suggested to Holy Trinity Church.
