Roger Fisher Obituary

(NEWS ARTICLE) Roger L. Fisher, 70, a high school sports star who in his long teaching career inspired students to pursue science-related professions, died Feb. 20 in his West Toledo home. He had dementia, the result of a degenerative condition believed to be related to Parkinson's disease.

Mr. Fisher retired in 2000 from Northwood High School, where he taught physics and chemistry, but also ecology and other subjects related to his interest in the outdoors, including a 1970s-era course in ichthyology, the study of fish.

Mr. Fisher motivated students to study science further and eventually to find livelihoods in health and science fields, recalled Jim Stewart, retired director of guidance at Northwood.

"[That] He was very well admired is an understatement," Mr. Stewart said. "He tolerated no nonsense. I think the kids really appreciated that."

Mr. Fisher didn't allow students to say they couldn't do something, his wife, Lynn Fisher, said.

"Even if it was the lowest ability kid in the room, he would find a way to get them to understand a concept," his wife said.

When he retired, several families of former students created a science scholarship fund at Northwood in his name.

Mr. Fisher was Northwood's varsity boys basketball coach from 1969 to 1977. At his own alma mater, Waite High School in East Toledo, he entered as a 94-pound freshman who was 5 feet, 4 inches tall. He was an ace starting pitcher for the varsity baseball team his senior year - he'd gained 10 inches by then - and played varsity basketball. He pitched Waite to an 11-1 City League season his senior year and had an 0.68 earned run average and batted .464 besides. In basketball, he scored 33 points in a game over Macomber Vocational High School, a single-game record that stood for years.

He was in the Waite athletic hall of fame.

His real passion was the outdoors. He liked fishing and storm-chasing. The annual pro football championship was the occasion for Super Bowl Avoidance Day. He and his wife went to Oak Openings Metropark, whatever the weather.

He was born April 27, 1942, to Hazel and Fred Fisher. He attended Kent State University and was a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, where he played baseball and basketball. He had a master's degree in science education from the University of Toledo. He taught ecology at Lourdes College from 1985 to 1995. For three years in retirement, he taught middle-school math at West Side Montessori, where his wife is head of school.

Surviving are his wife, Lynn Fisher, whom he married Nov. 27, 1965; sons, Mark and David Fisher; sister, Mary Pigott, and four grandchildren.

Family members are to have an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday in the Ward Pavilion at Wildwood Metropark, with a gathering scheduled for 7 p.m. to share tributes and stories.

The family suggests tributes to the Roger Fisher Science Scholarship Fund at Northwood High School or to West Side Montessori for the development of natural playgrounds.

Mr Fisher was someone who helped me believe in myself he was our teacher when we eloped in 1968. We have been married for 54 years and still talk about what a great teacher he was. Our oldest daughter is a teacher, because she wanted that same kind of satisfaction in lifw.

Mr. Fisher was one of the four people who influenced me the most when I was growing up. He introduced me to Bob Dylan and thermodynamics . . . . what more can I say? The world will be a poorer place without him.

Fisher family-

My family and I are very sorry for your loss. I am glad I was able to meet Roger over the years... who can forget Roger and Lynn driving up to do the famous fish fries when Mark and I and others lived together in college. I also remember Roger walking thru my house in 2005 in the middle of massive renovations and him joking with me "Ron you're either really crazy or really brave to take this on!" I can tell from the entries of his students that he was a tremendous role model and mentor for many students over many years and his influence will live on. I consider myself fortunate to have met Roger.

Nice turn out last night-not at all surprizing. He was proud of how his boys turned out. I owe my career in fish biology and 30-yr employment at Ohio State/Stone Lab to his Ichthyology class. He set me up with an internship my senior year with the OSU boss that I would have my entire career there, getting paid to play with fish and teach Lake Erie ecology. John Hageman, NHS Class of '77

like the wake spreading behind reflects the cut of the boat, these messages speak to the measure of the man. Roger's influence continues to spread exponentially, across generations. He is a big part of why so many of us find joy and wonder in the world around us. His wonder became our wonder. I owe much of what I know about the lakes and the rivers and the fish and the trees and the atoms and the galaxies to Roger. I understand my place in, my impact on and my responsibility to the environment because I had Roger as both teacher and friend. Fish on, Rog. May your bait box be full and your line ever taut. You live in all of us now.

Mr. Fisher was quite simply a "legend". A true educator who inspired me to also become an educator. I have so many fond memories of his Physics and Ecology classes at Northwood. He went above and beyond the curriculum to teach life lessons that are still with me 22 years later. My deepest condolences to his family...you are all in my thoughts and prayers. Mr. Fisher was my favorite teacher at NHS. He taught the hardest subjects in such a way that you got it. He demanded respect and you didn't dare mess around in his class. Every student should have a teacher like him in their lifetime to truly understand that a teacher can care for you and really "teach". You knew he loved what he was doing and had a real passion for it. I am so lucky to have had him! God Bless his family and may they be comforted in knowing how many people he touched in his lifetime. What a wonderful legacy!!!!!!

So many memories I don't know where to start. He always volunteered as Dodgin' Rog the super Jock spinnin' tunes for the senior dance. He was awesome. Most memorable for me were field trips seining for fish and to OSU Stone LAB on Lake Erie for Ichthyology. He always said we would remember scientific names of some of the fish and I still do. It goes on and on. Through thousands of students.
RIP Mr. Fisher.

Every student throughout their academic career often has that one teacher who makes such a profound impact on them that it is never forgotten. Often the influence of this person is so great that their teachings and life lessons are referenced for many years. Roger Fisher was this person for a countless number of students who have passed through the halls of NHS. Your life, your legacy, your teaching and your influence will never be forgotten. Thanks for everything Mr. Fisher.

I'm pleasantly surprised to learn of your involvement with West Side Montessori. During my brief return to Toledo in 2005, I enrolled my boys into WSM. We loved our experience there. None of the Montessori schools here in Denver compare. I'm thinking you and WSM have a lot in common.

Lynn, I am so sorry to hear about Roger. He was truly a great man with his vast knowledge of all things "nature", as well as the other sciences, math and athletics. Mrs. Fisher and family: All of these people have paid tribute to our teacher, coach, and friend to your husband, father, and grandfather. As HB Adams said, ‘A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.' Mr. Fisher was a great teacher who inspired all of us into the fields of Science and Mathematics. Yet, he never took himself too seriously when he would participate in Star Wars Skits and plays. He always wanted the best for his students and pushed them to succeed; when I graduated with my PhD, he asked me what was next and how would I help others. And for all that he did, he was most proud of your work and efforts at the West Side Montessori. Just know that Mr. Fisher may not have seen the fruit of a day's work but these tributes are testaments to his character, influence, and inspiration. My deepest condolences to you and your family. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Mr.Fisher was my Chemistry teacher my first year at Northwood, having just moved from the Waite district to Northwood in my sophomore year. I in no way wanted to take Chemistry but had to for science credit to graduate. I went into the class with the attitude "I'll do just enough to pass" Mr. Fisher in no way let me do "just enough to pass" he challenged me daily and by the end of the year I actually liked chemistry. He was a very well respected teacher. My sympathies to the Fisher family, God's peace & blessings be with you at this time.

I never cared much for science in school, but that changed when I had Mr. Fisher as a teacher. He had a wonderful way of making even the most obtuse subjects sound so simple. I still think of him every time I see light bending through water or hear about the South Bass Islands and their ability to grow grapes.

Even more than that, he possessed an incredible way to take control of a room and teach lessons that had nothing to do with school.

Simply put, he was wonderful, and he will be missed by the hundreds and hundreds of students who had the honor of learning from him. -NHS class of 2001

Roger didn't bring it up again with me...phew!!!

I am Blessed and Honored to have had Mr. Fisher as my teacher from 1975 to 1978. He was my Mentor. I went into Radiology due to his great teaching of Physics and Chemistry. May he always be remembered by Northwood Schools in the highest of standards. My sympathies to the Fisher family.

It was a pleasure to be a part of the Fisher family, heartwarming to witness the unconditional love that Lynn had for Rog and quite an honor to hear so many wonderful stories from friends and family through the "open door policy" at the Fisher home. I will never forget the monthly lunch gatherings with his Waite high school friends, seeing his face light up, hearing more great stories and feeling so much love as his friends would line up to take turns saying hello to him then departed with a peck on his forehead. At home with Rog I would put the jukebox oldies on and honestly I can't carry a tune across the street but that never mattered to him, I'd sing my heart out and he'd smile and say " I love you, you're cool" and I'd laugh and say "no Rog, you are the cool one and I love you right back !" Thanks for the memories, I'm sure gonna miss ya. Luv ya Bud

The Roger Fisher Show was my favorite show at NHS. Mr Fisher was an awesome educator and mentor. As one of the students who owes her science related career to him, he will be missed. Prayers to his family and thank you for sharing him with the students of Northwood for so many years.

God Bless and prayers to the Fisher family, Mr. Fisher or Rodge as he was sometimes referred to as will never be forgotten. He has touched so many lives at Northwood High School for three and a half decades. Rest in Peace Mr. Fisher and we will be thinking about you, because all of your students have so many great memories to share.

Roger stands out as the most influential teacher I ever had, not because of his course content but because of the way he challenged me, prodded me, to be something. While this was over 45 years ago, his lessons about life still are so valuable to me now.
