Carl L. Ruetz died Friday, May 24, 2013, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He was born May 11, 1920, in Toledo, Ohio to William J. and Edna (Eff) Ruetz. Carl lived in the Heatherdowns area of Toledo for 63 years and the last three years at Otterbein Portage Valley Retirement Village.

Carl was a veteran of WWII serving in the South Pacific (New Guinea) for three years. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries in combat, two battle stars and the Bronze Star for bravery. He was active in Boy Scouts of America for 27 years and Scoutmaster of Heatherdowns troop 200. He received the Silver Beaver, scouting's highest local Council award.

Carl was a talented woodworker making most of his furniture. He also made Shaker reproduction pieces for many years. He worked as a gardener and maintenance man at the Ward Canaday Estate for 32 years. He retired in 1986 as Building Supt. of the Spitzer Bldg. Co. having worked there for ten years.

Carl was a sixty-one year member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. He was loved by many and respected by all.

Carl was preceded in death by parents, 2 sisters and 7 brothers. He is survived by his wife Theda of 67 years; two sons, Carl Ruetz, Jr. (Linda) of Whitehouse, OH and David Ruetz (Sherry) of Cadillac, MI. Also surviving are five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and sister, Lucy Pitts of Bryan, OH.

Friends may call at the Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Ave., on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1825 Glendale Ave., with Pastor Jim Wicker and Pastor Jim Budke officiating. Burial will follow in Toledo Memorial Park and Cemetery, Sylvania, Ohio. The family suggests memorials to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
