John "Jack"

Jack Thiessen, 89, of Temperance, MI, died Friday, August 30, 2013. Born November 8, 1923, in Detroit, MI, to John Caldwell and Rhoda (Amstutz) Thiessen. He was a WWII Army veteran, and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals. He was a writer, author, editor, movie critic, photographer and PR consultant for several companies and ministries, including Detroit Times, Newport Communications, Pioneer Clubs and Missionary Internship. Named senior vice president of Edward Howard & Co, he moved to Toledo in l979 to open a branch office for the company. He started his own agency, PR Counselors, in 1984, with truck-related companies comprising the majority of his clientele. At various times, they included, Volvo White, Detroit Diesel, Dana Corporation, Rockwell Automotive, Michelin, Kysor-Cadillac, Bendix Automotive, Ruan Transportation, and TRALA, the Truck Renting And Leasing Association.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marie (Peterson), daughter, Sally Pyburn; sisters, Carol, and Lois Thiessen. He is survived by his second wife, Geraldine (Rinehart) Filonczuk; daughters, Kathy (Doug) Risher, and Sue Habusta; son, Peter (Grace) Thiessen; 14 grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Mark (Penny) Filonczuk, and Beth (Kurt) Swiderski, and sister, Vera Thiessen Hillis.

A memorial service will be held Monday, September 2, 2013, at Bedford Alliance Church, 8645 Jackman Rd., Temperance, MI, where visitation will be after 10 a.m. Memorials may be made to Pioneer Clubs, Box 788, Wheaton, IL 60187. Arrangements by the Michael W. Pawlak Funeral Home, Temperance, MI.
