James Kawczynski Obituary


James Edward "Ski" Kawczynski, age 73, of the Polish Village, passed away Saturday July 6, 2013, in Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg. James was born August 16, 1939, in Toledo to Mieczyslaw Irene (Michalak) Kawczynski.

After graduating from St. Hedwig School and Macomber High School, he served his country in the U.S. Air Force retiring as a Staff Sergeant after 22 years of service. Jim married Donna Reichow June 4, 1983. For 18 years he worked at the State Liquor Store on Door and Reynolds until they closed. An active member of St. Hedwig Catholic Church, Jim was a Eucharist Minister, Lector and a festival volunteer for 19 years. Jim was always active in his community serving others. He served as Past Commander and Chaplain of American Legion Post 545 and the Catholic War Vets Post 1675. He was also a member with the Polish Army Veterans Post 74, VFW Post 5530, as well as the Knights of Columbus St. Lawrence Council.

Surviving are his loving wife of 30 years, Donna; his sisters, Sophie (Robert) Precht Sr., and Irene Betty May, and his brother, Jack LaGrou; nephew, Robert (Rosie) Precht Jr.; great-nephews, Robert Precht III and Michael James Precht, and good family friend, Tyler O'Brien. Also surviving are brother-in-law, Harry (Diane) Reichow and Shelly Kawczynski. Preceding him in death are his parents; infant brother, Joseph, and brothers, Roman and Mitchell Kawczynski.

Friends may visit Wednesday July 10, 2013, from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Urbanski Funeral Home, 5055 Secor Rd. (north of Laskey) (419)475-5055 with Catholic War Veterans praying a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will begin Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in the Urbanski Funeral Home, 2907 LaGrange Street (at Dexter) with the funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. in St. Hedwig Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Toledo. Contributions may be made to the St. Hedwig maintenance fund, Hospice of Northwest Ohio or The Honor Flight. The family would like to thank Fr. Joseph Poggemeyer and Fr. Pokrywinski for their many visits to Jim during his illness, as well as the Doctors and Nurses of St. Vincent and Toledo Hospitals and Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their Care and Compassion.
