Joseph Hood

Joseph Hood Curl passed away July 5, 2014. He was born on August 20, 1925, in Wheeling, West Virginia, the eldest son of attorney Joseph R. Curl and Lucie Hood Curl.

He attended local public schools, graduating from Tridelphia High School in 1943, whereupon he immediately entered the Navy V-12 program. He studied at the University of Virginia and the University of Michigan and then entered the United States Naval Academy in 1944. He graduated with the class of 1948, and was assigned to the USS Columbus on which he served for two years before entering submarine school in New London, CT. Duty on board the USS Argonaut, USS Barb and USS Torsk followed.

It was while in New London that he met his future wife, Elizabeth Steane, from West Hartford, who was attending Connecticut College across the Thames River from the sub base. He and "Beth" were married in 1952, following her graduation from college. They were married for 60 years until her death in 2012. They have four children, Stephen of Palo Alto, CA, Thomas (Ann) of Franklin, TN, Mary Gorte (John) of Midland, MI and Joseph R. (Phil) of Ipswich, MA and five grandchildren, Lauren, Eric, Mark, Thomas Jr. and Ethan.

He left the Navy in 1954, and joined Owens Corning Fiberglas at Newark, Ohio. He continued his career with Owens Corning for 32 years, serving in various management positions and locales in engineering and manufacturing management. He retired from Owens Corning in 1986, and moved to Hilton Head Island, SC where he and Beth built a home.

Joe was a member of the Country Club Hilton Head, First Presbyterian Church, Navy League, local chapter of the USNA graduates and a life-long member of the Presidents Circle of the USNA Foundation.

He was particularly active in golf and bridge groups and was fond of family gatherings at the family summer retreat in East Lyme, CT.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 10 at 11:30 a.m. at Honey Horn Chapel at First Presbyterian Church.

The Island Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
