Kathleen E.

Kathleen E. "Kay" Korthuis, age 78, of Lambertville, Michigan, passed away from cancer on October 6, 2012, at home in the care of family and Hospice of Northwest Ohio. She was born on March 29, 1934, to Rev. Dewey and Tess Hoitenga in Hancock, Minnesota. She lived in Peoria, Iowa followed by Prospect Park, New Jersey during World War II while her father served as a Chaplain in the U.S. Army. The family then moved to West Sayville, Long Island, NY and finally Lafayette, Indiana where she graduated from Jefferson High School. She attended Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, graduating with an R.N. diploma from Blodgett Memorial Hospital. She married Ron Korthuis in Grand Rapids, Michigan on September 4, 1954. She later received her B.S.N. and M.S.N. degrees from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan and her Ph.D. from University of Toledo in Ohio.

As a nurse, Kay developed the first ICU in Michigan at Blodgett Hospital, became a geriatric nurse practitioner, was a professor and associate dean of nursing at Medical College of Ohio and dean of Seattle School of nursing at Seattle University in Washington. She was a member of Sigma Theta Tau and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies and the recipient of many awards in nursing and teaching. In retirement, she was on the board of Sunset House and had a particular love for Alzheimer's patients.

Kay grew up in the Christian Reformed Church and was an organist for many years at Community Christian Reformed Church in Lambertville, Michigan. In retirement she was an elder, librarian and group organizer at Christ Presbyterian Church in Toledo, Ohio. She is survived by her husband, Ron; her son, Dr. Ronald (Shari) Korthuis of Columbia, Missouri; her daughters, Sara Tiede, MS, BSN (John) of Colorado Springs, CO and Dr. Barb (Jeff) Watson of Whitehouse, Ohio, and her sisters, Rose (John) Kossen, Esther (Dave) Van Zytveld, and Lois (Marv) Roelofs. She will be greatly missed by grandchildren, Becky, Julie, Jake, Mike, Christine, Erin (Matt), David (Tara, great-grandsons Acer and Ash), James, Jacob and Alaina. She was preceded in death by her brother, Dr. Dewey Hoitenga (Kay) and her parents.

Visitation will be Friday, October 12, 2012, from 4-8 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave., Toledo, Ohio. Services will be Saturday, October 13, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Christ Presbyterian Church, 4225 W. Sylvania Ave., Toledo, Ohio.
