Kay Marie Claussen, 62 years, of Ida, MI passed away Monday, July 22, 2013, in Ebeid Hospice, Sylvania, OH. The daughter of Joseph and Ina (McMullen) Ferguson, she was born May 5, 1951, in Temperance. A Bedford High School graduate, she also attended Monroe County Community College. February 24, 1968, she married Irvin "Russ" Claussen in Beaver Falls, PA.
Kay was an adored wife and mother who lived a life full of joy and contentment. She gave her time freely and willingly, and enjoyed a special relationship with her husband, sons, mother, siblings, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She took particular delight in the company of young children; their exuberance and innocence brought a singular joy to her being.
Kay's interests were numerous and varied. She loved debating and discussing the relative merits of a wide range of literature, foreign and domestic films, and music with her friends and family. Kay possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of all three topics, and discussions concerning film and music were a staple during work at the Ida Independent Dairy, where she cultivated several close friendships as manager of the store. Rock and roll music was especially close to her heart, and Kay enjoyed attending concerts with her children and their spouses, sister-in-law, Marshia, and grandchildren. Kay often reminisced about seeing Bob Dylan in concert, and once met the Ramones with her daughter-in-law, Daphne. These moments were among her most treasured recollections.
Kay was an avid outdoorswoman for much of her life, and she enjoyed camping, hiking, fishing, and hunting with her family. Bow hunting trips in northern Michigan with husband, Rusty and cousin, Bussey provided many precious memories. Annual camping trips on the Muskegon River with her family were mainstays for several years, and provided cherished memories for all who attended.
Closer to home, Kay's hobbies included gardening, quilting, computers, and video gaming. She was a superb gardener whose green thumb was the envy of many. Kay spent countless hours nurturing the soil in a labor of love to produce an abundance of beautiful flowers, and to create the spectacular beds, which populated her yard every spring and summer. Quilting was another passion, one which she enjoyed sharing with her sister, Marvell. Kay was also an enthusiastic computer gamer and participant in MMOs, where she developed lasting friendships with people as far away as Australia and New Zealand.
Those closest to Kay will miss her unique sense of humor, quick wit, and loving personality; her laughter, and a smile which radiated intelligence, warmth, and compassion. Revered mother and grandmother, devoted wife, beloved sister and aunt, she will be sorely missed by those fortunate and privileged enough to have known and loved her.
Kay is survived by her loving husband, Russ Claussen; children, David (Sylvia), Jason (Daphne), Aaron (Autumn), Andrew Claussen; mother, Ina Ferguson; mother-in-law, Shirley Claussen; siblings, Carmen (Rollie) Cousino, Marvelle (Richard) Edinger, Arthur Ferguson, Drexel Ferguson, Dr. Donald (Marty) Ferguson, Michael (Valerie) Ferguson, Cindy Ferguson, Patrick Ferguson, and 8 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father; sister, Ina Jo; and father-in-law, Irvin Claussen, Sr.
Visitation will be held Thursday, July 25, 2013, from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. in Urbanski's Bedford Funeral Chapel 8300 Lewis Ave. Temperance, MI where a Service and Celebration of her life will be held Friday, July 26, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Bedford Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
