As Mark's wife it was my bittersweet task to authorize his being taken off the ventilator. Although we had been separated for several years, we remained friends and spoke often on the phone. From the conversations we had over the last couple of months I could tell he was not his usual self. He seemed disconnected in a way, and I wanted so much to go see him because I knew it was only a matter of time before I would no longer have the chance. Now the chance is gone, but I feel him here with me closer than ever. I know he is finally at peace, and I am somehow at peace as well.
