Matthew M. "Matt"
Matthew M. "Matt" Matell, age 62, of Toledo, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 24, 2013, at The Toledo Hospital with his loving family at his side. He was born on October 2, 1950, in Toledo, OH to Adolph and Ann (Sienicki) Matell. Matt was a graduate of Ladyfield Grade School and St. Francis De Sales High School, class of '68. He attended Xavier University and completed his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Psychology at the University of Toledo. He was employed as a team leader for Lucas County Job and Family Services for 24 years. Before that he had worked for the Lake Carriers Association, NFO Incorporated of Northwood Ohio, and Skyline Chili. He was a parishioner of Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
An avid outdoorsman, Matt was a member of the Adams Conservation Club and the Mudjaw Bowmen Archery Club. He was a Cub Scout Leader for Pack #1 of St. Adalbert Parish, and a Boy Scout Leader for Troop #14 of Hampton Park. Matt met his wife Audrey in college where they shared classes in camping, rock climbing and various other outdoor survivor classes. They were able to backpack the Bruce Trail in Canada. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting and hiking with his wife, as well as his children and granddaughter.
Matt is survived by his devoted wife of 33 years, Audrey Berning-Matell; children, Heather (Aaron) Lauth of Sylvania and Zachary Matell of Toledo; granddaughter, Ericka Lauth, and sisters, Anne Maloney of Riverview, MI and Christine Illenden of Toledo. His parents preceded him in death.
Family and friends may visit on Tuesday from 4:00-8:00 p.m., and Wednesday from 2:00-8:00 p.m. at Sujkowski Funeral Home Northpointe, 114 E. Alexis Rd., with a Scripture Service Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will begin Thursday at 9:15 a.m. in the funeral home and continue with the Funeral Mass in Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be given to St. Francis De Sales High School for tuition assistance, the Mudjaw Bowmen Archery Club, or Ducks Unlimited. Online condolences can be shared at
