Richard O. Young, age 81, passed away on Saturday, December 15, 2012, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio's Toledo Care Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born to Fred and Erna (Calcamuggio) Young in Toledo, OH on July 8, 1931. Richard was a 1949, Graduate of Waite High School. Having a passion for teaching, he earned his Bachelor of Education from the University of Toledo where he was active in the Tau Kappa Epsilon, Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Alpha Theta and Pi Gamma Mu Fraternities, the F.T.A. and the YMCA, and as a reporter and editor for the University news publications and freshman handbook. He went on to earn his Teaching Certificate and Masters of Education from the University of Michigan, and his Doctorate from Georgetown University. Richard's love for teaching led him to the University of Oregon where he was a professor and Dean. He was also employed as a counselor at the State of Oregon Employment Office. Richard enjoyed traveling with his wife, Hilda on their adventures to Alaska, Europe and China.
Richard is survived by his sisters, Marilyn Schuster and Juanita (Edward) Barnes; brother, Frederick (Martha) Young; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harvey and Jane Yap, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Hilda Young; sister, Rosann Timmons; brothers-in-law, Ken Timmons, and Robert Schuster Sr.; half brother, Paul Young, and half sisters, Viola Williams and Maudina Maybach.
A graveside service will be held in Clay Township Cemetery on Saturday, December 22, 2012, at 11 a.m. Arrangements are being handled by Sujkowski Funeral Home Northpointe, 419-476-9176.
