Robert Huntley, Sr., age 73, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Thursday, January 17, 2013. Affectionately known as "Bobby," he was born on June 9, 1939, to Claude and Rosa Huntley in Toledo, Ohio. He was the youngest of the ten Huntley children.
Robert demonstrated the gift of music at age six playing primarily the piano, organ and some wind instruments. He attended Gunckel Elementary, played in the band at Libbey High School and was a graduate of Libbey High School.
Robert played the organ and piano at the old Wabash and Zion churches, now known as New Life Church of God in Christ. He also served as the Music Director for many Toledo churches including St. James Holiness Church, Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church, Spring Street Baptist Church, Phillip's Temple, United Baptist Church, and other churches. There are a countless number of singers and musicians who have been touched and motivated by his musical ministry. He was truly unique.
He was appointed President and Music Director of the Ohio North Jurisdiction #1, Church of God in Christ. Upon the advent of his illness, he scaled back his services to include providing comforting music for Dale-Riggs, Day, and Brown Funeral Homes. Robert served over fifty (50) years in music ministry, and his prolific legacy has been firmly established.
During his career, Robert was employed by the U.S. Postal Service and held the position of Station Manager at Wernert's Corner and Reynolds Branch. He was a substitute Post Master for Maumee and Perrysburg Post Offices, retiring in 1992.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Rosa Huntley; his sisters, Mattie Huntley, Florence Reece, Dorothy Sharp, and Ernestine Billups, and brother, Carl Huntley.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Sylvia; his children, Debra Stegall (Marvin) of Atlanta, GA; Robin Huntley of Toledo, OH; Robert Huntley, Jr. (Yvette) of Suwanee, GA, and Wendi Huntley of Toledo, OH; his grandchildren, Summer Stegall, Sunny (Tim) Edwards, Erin Huntley, Drew Huntley, and Mason Huntley; his great-grandson, Jordan White; his sister, Betty Huntley of Toledo, OH; his brothers, Harold Huntley (Berdell) of Toledo, OH, Claude Huntley of Ft. Washington, MD, and Jonathan Huntley of Palmdale, CA; his brother-in-law, James Witten (Roma) of Englewood, NJ; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Visitation will be Friday 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Dale-Riggs Funeral Home Chapel. Family hour Saturday 10:00 a.m. followed by funeral services at 11:30 a.m. St. James, The Armory, entombment Toledo Memorial Park.
