Robert J. Thompson, 86, of Toledo, passed away Wednesday, December 5, 2012, surrounded by his loving family, at St. Luke's Hospital. He was born on October 22, 1926 to James and Helen (McLaughin) Thompson. Robert served in the U.S. Army and retired as Master Sergeant from the Army reserves after 20 years of service. Robert married Eleanor Cook on May 10, 1947 at South Side Christian Church in Toledo. Robert worked for over 30 years for the U.S. Postal Service beginning as a carrier and retiring as a maintenance supervisor.
He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member and Past Master of Triad Masonic Lodge and currently a member of Barton Smith Masonic Lodge No. 613; member and Past Monarch of O-Ton-Ta-La Grotto #40; member of Zenobia Shrine and the American Legion Post 468. Robert was a longtime member of McCord Road Christian Church, Sylvania, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Eleanor. Robert is survived by his children, Cathleen (LaVon) Carver and Tim (Lori) Thompson; eleven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Evelyn (Tom) Becker, and sisters-in-law, Jean Thompson and Rose Thompson.
Friends may call at the Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Ave. on Sunday, December 9, 2012, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Barton Smith Masonic Lodge services will be Sunday at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Entombment will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Memorials contributions are requested to McCord Road Christian Church.
