Ruth M. Stephenson (Johnson) Custar

1918 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
Ruth M. Stephenson (Johnson) Custar Obituary
Ruth M. (Johnson) Stephenson Custar

Ruth M. (Johnson) Stephenson Custar, age 100, passed away on September 2, 2018, at The Glendale Assisted Living Facility, Toledo, OH, where she had lived the past 3 1/2 years. Ruth was born on March 7, 1918, in North Baltimore, OH, to parents, Clint and Bertha Johnson, but lived most of her life in Toledo.

Among other places, Ruth worked at Franklin Ice Cream by the University of Toledo, and had fond memories of her co-workers and the students; she retired from Champion Spark Plug in 1981. She loved to fish (caught them, cleaned them, cooked them, but never ate one), crochet, knit, bowl, and taught herself to paint and play the organ after retirement.

Ruth was preceded in death by her son, David Stephenson; sons-in-law, Chuck Callahan and Don Spurgeon; granddaughters, Angela Stephenson and Wendy Szczublewski; husband, Doug Custar; dear friend, Ray Kubitz; brother, Ollie Johnson; sisters, Marie Paben, Leota "Pee Wee" Paule, Doris LaLonde, Treva Park and Corrine Scherer.

Ruth is survived by her son, Randy (Rose) Stephenson, and daughters, Donna Spurgeon, Sharon Callahan and Vicki (Dennis) Duncan; grandchildren, Dawn (Mike) Kropff, Scott (Melissa) Stephenson, Mark (Kelly) Stephenson, Mike Stephenson, Laurie Wilson, Shelly Anderson, Jody Scribner, LuAnn (Denis) Hoot, Peggy (Bill) Hoot, and Megan (John Puro) Rinehart; as well as nine great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff of The Glendale, especially Jodi Kimball, who took care of Mom and made sure she was included in outings and bingo, and always indulged our family when we descended on their facilities for birthday parties and holidays. Thanks also to Great Lakes Hospice for their care and concern.

Friends are invited to visit on Thursday, from 3-8 p.m., at the Ansberg-West Funeral Home, 3000 Sylvania Avenue, (between Secor and Douglas Roads), where funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be Epilepsy Center of Northwest Ohio, 1701 Holland Road, Maumee 43537 or the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
