Shirley Johanna (Veith) Carpenter Obituary
Shirley Johanna (Veith) Carpenter

Shirley Johanna (Veith) Carpenter, age 83, of Toledo, OH passed away on Sunday, July 8th, 2018 peacefully at her home while surrounded by family. She was born January 19, 1935 to Otis and Helen (Schonder) Benge.

She was a loving wife, caring mother, generous and compassionate grandmother, and a thoughtful friend. Her personality was one of a kind, something that no one could match. She had the best sarcasm and could make the whole room laugh.

Shirley worked as a waitress in East Toledo, as a line worker at APEX, and then retired as a Chief Switch Board Operator for The Medical College of Ohio after 23 years. She was known by her colleagues as a very dedicated woman. Shirley set a great example for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her motto was, "If you want something you must work for it; nothing in life is given to you."

Shirley was an avid bowler at Lido Lanes, and a die-hard Elvis Presley fan. She enjoyed watching NASCAR and the Pittsburgh Steelers and reading mystery novels. She loved reminiscing about old stories, keeping in contact with her large family through hour-long phone calls, long car rides and taking the scenic route.

Shirley made a large impact with everyone she met. If you shared a hug, a joke, a sarcastic remark, or just a conversation with her, you knew how truly remarkable, inspiring, and selfless of a person she was.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Otis and Helen Benge; husband, Benny A. Carpenter Sr.; daughter, Kelley Speelman; son, Benny A. Carpenter Jr.; son-in-law, James Bricker; brother, Otis Benge; sisters, Becky Fitzpatrick and Noreen Rank; and her special friend Joyce Manning. She is survived by her children, Carl (Donna) Veith Jr., Tina (John) Harman, Tonya Anderson/Bricker, Michael (Sherri) Veith Sr., and Chris (Robin) Carpenter; son-in-law, Walt Speelman; daughter-in-law, Theresa Carpenter; siblings, LouAnn Lowery, Timothy (Sue) Benge, Beverly (Ron) Dahmer, and Karen St. Clair; 22 grandchildren, and 42 great grandchildren.

Shirley's life celebration will be Friday July 13 from noon until the Funeral begins at 6:00 p.m. in Urbanski Funeral Home, a Life Celebration Home 5055 Secor Rd. Toledo, Ohio 419-475-5055.
