Coach, you will be deeply missed. I learned a lot about life playing for you on Northview's 90-91 team. It takes a strong man to brave out an 0-21 season, which I use in teaching my own children. A team does not always have to have more points to come out on top. One can still WIN by remembering What's Important Now.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time. I can't stop thinking about Coach and the impact he had on me and I found this site. I played for Coach from '74-'78 at SJ. Coach was very tough, so tough he cut me my freshman year and luckily asked me back. Because I knew everything back then we had a few battles and Coach always won. Only later did I realize that his lessons would positively impact the way I approach many aspects of my life. I wish I could have shared this with Coach but did not realize his impact until it was too late.

My condolences go out to the Tim Smith family and close friends. Tim gave his life to the betterment of our youth. He was always there for his athletes and all his students. I feel very fortunate to have worked with him at Lake High School and to go up against him when he was elsewhere. He was one of the great guys of teaching/coaching who faced adversity a number of times but always kept his head up and the kids in mind. He gave a lot to all who touched his life>

It was touching to hear that Tim's granddaughter just realized that her grandfather was "kind of famous". Though he is known best for his coaching and his contributions to BCSN, Tim was also a wonderful camp counselor. A part of my smile will always belong to Tim. My prayers to his family, Sharon, and the kids.

To the Smith Family, my deepest condolences. I played basketball 1971-75 at St. John's. In adddition I played baseball for him freshman year. He was an intense coach, but the most scared I got was my first day in driver's ed when I took a car over the curb into somebody's yard in Ragan Woods. My kids to this day wonder why I screamed "BRAKE!" so often when I taught them to drive. It was a thrill to call into his old TV sports call-in show and be recognized after not seeing him for years. Recently it was good to get his insights into HS games before the broadcast. He always had a smile when doing those. Godspeed, Coach. You will be missed.

Thinking of you and your family and friends during this time of need. Tim was a friend and mentor to many of us in the basketball coaching profession who always took time to help others and share his thoughts. More importantly he shared his time and thoughts in many ways beyond the game of basketball and taught us more about life. On behalf of all coaches who knew and respected Tim, may God Bless you forever.

To the Smith family,
I played basketball for Coach Steve Smith at Swanton High School and would like to say that I am very proud and very lucky to have been able to be part of Coach Smith's legacy. His passion for the game was second to none. He wanted to win more than anything, but wanted to win the right way. He is one of the few coaches I played for that really gave you the feeling that he cared for you and wanted to see you suceed both on and off the court. The world lost a wonderful teacher, mentor, and coach. God bless the family and stay with them in this time of need.

My deepest sympathy to Tim's family. Tim was my classmate not only at Borromeo High School but, before that, at St. Jerome's grade school. We spent many hours together playing basketball in the CYO league.
I remember Tim as an honest, hardworking friend...a truly good man.
He will be greatly missed.

To the Smith Family,
Tim was my swimming instructor at The Anderson's Summer Camp when I was young. He always pushed us to do our best and ended the day with a smile and a positive comment. It has been a pleasure getting to know him again as he watched his grandchildren in Perrysburg sports. May his memories bring you comfort during this difficult time.

I am so sorry to hear of Tim's death. We were classmates at Borromeo (1953-1956) I remember fondly, our times together on the basketball court and ball fields in Wickliffe. He was a good friend and a good man. I was happy to re-establish contact with him after so many years. I just wish I had been able to spend more time with him, catching up on all that has transpired in our lives since high school. He will be missed. I will remember him daily, in my prayers.

Please accept our deepest sympathy. Over the years we had some tremendous battles on the court but always had great respect for each other. A man of great integrity and dedication will be missed in the coaching fraternity. Coach Fisher and Linda....Swanton Bulldogs

My sincere sympathy to the Smith family. Tim was an excellent teacher of the game of basketball. I was fortunate to have officiated many of his games. Tim's smile was contagious and he made it fun just being at the game. His insight about coaching basketball and tennis will be missed. Thanks, coach, for your friendship and trust.

To the Family of Coach Tim Smith,
My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Although Coach Smith was a demanding coach, he only wanted the best for his players and students. It was a pleasure and honor to play at St. John's under his basketball program from 1973 to 1977. I'm sure there are many out there who continue utilize his shuffle offense and practice drills while coaching their sons and daughters today and some probably still hold up blue and gold towels for defensive schemes and have their kids tap their heads to start a play. God speed Coach.

Please accept my deepest prayerful sympathy. I was privileged to be one of Tim's teachers when he was in the high school seminary. Tim was an excellent athlete and a marvelous cheerful young man, a real to have around . I remember him so vividly.
I'm sure the Lord is pleased to have Tim in His eternal kingdom, enjoying the beatific presence of the Lord. Prayers for him and for all his family. May he rest in peace.
Most sincerely,

Coach Smith was my varsity basketball coach during my junior and senior years at St. John's (1977-1979). Since I probably had more attitude than the other guys, he used to stay on my case constantly. One day I said to him, "Why are you always so hard on me?" And I will always remember his response, he said: "I stay on your case because I like you and I want you to succeed." Thirty years later I'm still reaping the rewards of the affection he had for me, and the discipline he applied to my life.

Coach:
You will be forever missed. Thank you for putting up with the Northview tennis girls for all those years:-) Not to mention having most of us in your classes. You taught us so much in the classroom, in sports, and in life. You always made us laugh! You forever touched our lives. I will be praying and thinking of your family. I look forward to seeing you one day in paradise.

To Steve, Kelley, Mike and family. Please accept our condolences on your Dad's passing. As a teacher, coach and the father of three loving children, I've had the highest respect and appreciation for what he gave to the community. I feel privileged to have had the chance to know him and each of you. I'll be forever in his debt for allowing the least of his basketball players (me) the opportunity to score the final point, just barely, at Lake High School's old gymnasium before it closed down--which showed both a great deal of compassion and great comic timing on his part. I'm sure he's in Heaven now still trying to convince Dennis M. to drive with two hands on the wheel (or not to drive at all!).
Take care,
Sean, Alice, Peter and Patrick Walsh

My condolences to the family of Tim Smith. Although he was best known as a coach, he had a very positive impact on my life through his work in the classroom. I appreciated the work ethic and self-discipline he taught me in the early 1970s. God bless you.

Tim and I worked together two years during the l964-65 and l965-66 basketball seasons at Sandusky St. Mary's in Sandusky, Ohio. I was the sportscaster at WLEC-AM and FM, Tim was the head basketball coach. We did a fifteen minute, sponsored "coach's corner" interview show each week during the season. I would travel to St. Mary's, take along my Webcor tape recorder and we would do the interview show. Later I saw Tim a few times in the Toledo area and I know he was especially close with Bud Felhaber. Bud and I taught together at Clay High School. I do remember one of Tim's sons (Steve?) did his student teaching at Clay and I got to know him and enjoyed our conversations. My condolences to the Smith family.

Mike and Family . . . I have fond memories of competing against Coach (and you too Mike) and always appreciated his passion for basketball which was only overshadowed by his care and respect for the players. Where I certainly did not have the opportunity to know your father as well as his own players and students, I feel that I am a better person for the time I did get to share with him. Thoughts and prayers with your family.

To the Family, you have my deepest sympathies at this time.
On a more personal note, your Father was tough as a Coach, but then again some people needed tough. You just don't realize it as you go through it.
He told me a couple of weeks ago I could always play for him, so I hope he holds that roster spot for me till I get there.
Sincerely,

Coach Smith was the consumate professional, always willing to share his gifts and talents, to those who sought his advice. He was eager to discuss strategies with all, never condenscending. He loved the game of basketball, coached it hard, and made competition a passion. An icon in the high school sports' scene, Coach Smith will be greatly missed by family, friends, and fans. God Bless and thank you Coach Smith, for the legacy of integrity and dedication to an avocation you have left behind.
